The NASCAR championship format has been one of the biggest topics of discussion in the among the fans and the whole industry in the 2025 season. This forced the sanctioning body to announce plans to update it for the 2026 season and beyond. RFK Racing driver Chris Buescher is the latest driver to the growing list of racers to shares their thoughts.
Ahead of the Martinsville playoffs race, the last race before the playoffs, the ford driver declared that the format doesn’t reward consistency enough. Chris Buescher made this argument while highlighting his own situation, as despite scoring 16 top 10s, he isn’t in the playoffs. The veteran racer was sharing his thoughts on his team’s 2025 performance while making the bold assertion.
Consistency isn’t rewarded very well in this format, so, for us, we’ve been good. We haven’t quite been great and we’ve got a couple little steps to take here or there, but we’ve certainly been able to be a lot better rounded and enabled to be more competitive at any different style of racetrack and that’s been a lot of fun, whether it’s been short tracks, road courses, superspeedways, and mile-and-a-halves…

The No:17 Ford Mustang has become more rounded and more competitive in the 2025 season, but unfortunately, they failed to convert them to wins like they have done in the recent past. They need to take some small forward steps to become race winners, but the level they are in at the moment is nothing to be ashamed of.
We’re close on all of them, and some are a little stronger than others, but we just have this small step to take forward across the board to be in the hunt to win consistently, I guess, is when it really starts to pay off. So, there’s nothing to be ashamed about.

Chris Buescher shared his thoughts on RFK Racing’s 2025 season
In the same interview, the star racer was asked about how the 2025 season played out for him and his season. He asserted that it hasn’t been a great season for them, but believes it was good and asserted that his crew has work on helping him convert the consistency to race wins.

You know what, at the end of the day it’s not been a great season. It’s been a good season. The best way I’ve been able to put that is we’ve had moments that have been really good. We’ve been very consistent, but we have a step to take to be very consistently fighting for wins and that’s the big thing.
Chris Buescher said.
Further talking about the point, he asserted that one of the reasons for their failure was the inability to remain on the same level as they start of the season the first eight races of the year. Bad luck also played a significant role in making the season a tough battle for them.
We weren’t able to do that, obviously, but also, I think what was good for us was the first eight races were way more competitive than we had been in the past also, so we did not have this period where we felt like we were behind…have had our share of bad luck, but it’s been a good year. It’s just not been absolutely everything we wanted it to be.
Chris Buescher added.
The comments from the RFK Racing driver seems rational as the team didn’t match their potential this year. One of the major reasons behind this is fact that the big-3, JGR, HMS and Penske have been performing on a different level this season and Trackhosue Racing dominating all road course races with Shane van Gisbergen also played a role. Still, they have enough momentum to get back to winning ways in 2026.
