The New York Rangers are in a messy situation right now. Following the team’s poor run of form, the organization recently traded away captain Jacob Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks. Following his trade, the defenseman claimed there was a “threat” by the team. General Manager Chris Drury would later justify his decision.
Several players including Trouba were placed on the trade block as the team continued to spiral down. Even before the season, the team was working to trade him. The American international was reported to be on his way to the Detroit Red Wings. However, he used the no-trade clause in his contract and blocked out the move.
In an interview after the trade, Trouba claimed that the team forced him to move away. The 28-year-old said he either had to accept this or he would have found himself on the waivers.
These comments of Trouba ignited several debates on social media. While many fans had attacked Trouba for his performances before, there were some who were stunned by this “threat” from the Rangers management.
GM Drury would later break his silence on these talks and back himself. The 48-year-old claimed he did what he had to do in order for the team to move forward. Drury highlighted the move of Barclay Goodrow, who was placed on waivers and then claimed by the San Jose Sharks.
Drury in response to his tactics for working around no-trade clauses to offload Goodrow and Trouba:

"It's my job, and 31 other GMs’ jobs, to try and do everything we can to help our team. There's things at our disposal in the CBA. I'm not trying to mess with players. I have a…
After Trouba’s trade to the Ducks, the Rangers extended the contract of their goaltender Igor Shesterkin. The goaltender penned down an 8-year $92 million extension, making this the highest contract ever for a goalie in NHL history.
Former NHL star urges Rangers fans to apologize to GM Chris Drury after Jacob Trouba’s trade
Despite winning the President’s trophy last year, the New York Rangers have not achieved much success. This has led to many fans attacking the team’s management including GM Chris Drury. A former NHL star though has urged the fans to apologize to him after the trade of Jacob Trouba.
The ex-NHLer in this picture is Ryan Whitney. The former Pittsburgh Penguins and Edmonton Oilers player was not happy with the constant ‘chirping‘ from the fans on Drury.
In a post on X, Whitney lauded the work of Drury and praised him while asking the fans “to beg” for forgiveness from the GM.
Trouba’s trade from the Rangers also marks a notable trend in the team’s history. He is now the fourth consecutive captain of the team who has left the team before the expiration of his contract.
