Novak Djokovic criticized the trolls on social media for hurting players’ mental health in one of the press conferences at the Wimbledon Championships. Throughout the tournament, mental health was one of the topics that was heavily discussed.

It was after World No.3 Alexander Zverev revealed that he had been dealing with mental health issues since losing this year’s Australian Open final to World No.1 Jannik Sinner. Djokovic, when asked about the criticism that players receive on a daily basis on social media, said these platforms “dictate the mood and daily rhythm of an athlete“, that young athletes can get lost and can give a lot of importance to the negative comments.

Former WTA player Chris Evert couldn’t agree more. She took to X and wrote, “Tremendous answer“. In another post, she explained why she doesn’t use social media platforms much, but not without criticizing the trolls.

I don’t really engage in social media. What I’ve learned in my life is that people who are judgmental, mean, or critical are usually not happy with themselves. I’ve had moments like that! Kindness is the way to go..

Djokovic, for the first time since 2017, failed to progress to the Wimbledon final. After producing strong performances one after the other, the Serb suffered a nasty slip during the quarterfinal against Flavio Cobolli and later, in the semifinal he played against Sinner, Djokovic failed to play to his full potential, losing the match in straight sets.

Steve Flink thinks Novak Djokovic will start thinking about his retirement after the US Open

Novak Djokovic last lifted a Grand Slam title at the 2023 US Open. Since then, only once he was successful in reaching a Major final- at 2024 Wimbledon, which he lost in straight sets to Carlos Alcaraz. The Spaniard and Jannik Sinner have won the last seven titles, with both playing this year’s French Open and Wimbledon finals.

At the French Open, too, Sinner was the reason behind Djokovic’s exit, beating him in the semifinals in straight sets. In Melbourne back in January, injury issues forced him to hand the walkover to Alexander Zverev after losing the first set in the semifinals.

The next Major on the calendar is the US Open, which the 38-year-old has won four times. Last year at Flushing Meadows, his campaign was ended in the third round by Alexei Popyrin. Steve Flink, the American sports journalist who was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame back in 2017, said Djokovic could start to think about retirement if he loses the US Open.

I think Novak can accept these last three; he’s a little disappointed but proud to be in the semifinals. I think if he came to New York and didn’t go that far and had a surprising loss in the round of 16, then I think he might think seriously to say there is no point. How is this going to get better next year? I am going to turn 39. Why would my body react better?

Steve Flink said on Gill Gross’s YouTube channel

Djokovic was scheduled to play the Canadian Open next, but he withdrew from the event. He is expected to play the Cincinnati Masters next.

This season, Djokovic has won one title so far- at the Geneva Open by beating Hubert Hurkacz. The win made him the third man in the Open Era to win 100 or more singles titles after Jimmy Connors and Roger Federer.

He also reached the final of the Miami Open but couldn’t beat Jakub Mensik. Nole last won a Big Title in 2024 by beating Alcaraz in the Paris Olympics final.
