Chris Jericho made his debut in the professional wrestling world in 1990 and has become one of the most infamous superstars on the planet. He is known for constantly reinventing himself over the years across various companies, which can be largely attributed to his success. However, many people believe that he is much past his prime and should hang up his boots instead.
In an interview with The Daily Star, Jericho talked about retiring from professional wrestling. He mentioned the example of Sting, who retired in March earlier this year at the age of 64. He even addressed the “Please Retire” chants by fans, who had grown tired of the Lionheart. The AEW star recalled laughing at these chants, as he had zero intentions of hanging up his boots.
To me, when the ‘please retire’ chants were going, I was laughing because I have zero intentions of that. I’ve got a six-pack, I can do a moonsault, and I know exactly what I’m doing in the ring. I know how to write storylines. I like the company I work for. I like my boss. I like the guys and girls in the company. Why would I want to retire? What’s the point because someone told me to? F**k off.Chris Jericho speaking on The Daily Star
Jericho believed he was in great physical condition and that was reflected in the ring. Moreover, the veteran was privy to how storylines worked and could indulge in shaping them himself. Jericho also boasted about getting along with Tony Khan. Therefore, he saw no reason to step back from his career at the moment.
Chris Jericho claimed that he could still have the match of the night at any given show and thankfully, did not have any physical issues. He believed that age was just a number and one should only retire when one feels like it. Despite being 53 years old, he was having a great time in the ring and loved to head to work.
Chris Jericho believes he put the spotlight on WWE Undisputed Champion Cody Rhodes
The Lionheart has often been criticized for getting involved in feuds with rising stars with a lot of potential. This does not allow them to get involved in some of the promotion’s major storylines. Furthermore, they seemingly get stuck in a feud with the former WWE champion for a long time. Fans often refer to this as the ‘Jericho Vortex’ and blame him for eating time away from other superstars. Fans even blamed him for Sting’s retirement speech being cut off at AEW Revolution.
In an interview with TV Insider, the Ayotollah of Rock and Rolla looked at the vortex as a positive thing. He said that he had worked with several stars during their early days, such as Darby Allin, Orange Cassidy, and Jack Perry.
Even Cody Rhodes. Cody was not who he is now. He was a guy who had been a journeyman and then became one of the top guys in AEW. He was earmarked to be, but I did a lot to put a spotlight on him.Chris Jericho speaking with TV Insider
Jericho even said that he worked with Cody Rhodes when he was not who he is now. Although he was earmarked to be one of the top guys in AEW, the 53-year-old claimed to put the spotlight on him. Furthermore, he said that MJF became a way better wrestler after working with him for over a year.
