Chris Jones is among the top defensive linemen in football. Some would even consider him the best since Aaron Donald is no longer active. While Jones entered the 2024 season as the favorite to win the Defensive Player of the Year award, he has eyes for a bigger prize.

The Chiefs are 5-0 this season and have one of the best defenses in the league. Steve Spagnuolo’s men have only allowed an average of 88.4 yards on the ground and 17 points per game this season, which is fifth and sixth-best in the league.

Chris Jones spearheads the defense with his 1.98-meter stature but has been lacking behind in terms of numbers. He currently has 11 tackles, one forced fumble, and only 3 sacks in five games, which is quite low compared to his high standards.

We’ve played five games, [and] I’ve got three sacks. I’m not complaining. Like I say every year: I’ll get my numbers. Might be early. Might be later.

2023 DPOY Browns’ Myles Garrett has 14 tackles and 4 sacks; according to the latest survey, he is not even among the favorites. That honor goes to the Steelers’ TJ Watt with 25 tackles and 4.5 sacks, followed by the Texans’ Will Anderson Jr. with 19 tackles and 5.5 sacks.

When Chris Jones was asked if a slow start to the season would hamper his dream of winning the Best Defensive Player in the league award, the 30-year-old cleared his priority.

As a selfish individual looking at it from just my perspective, a [DPOY] would mean a lot. But I’ll take a damn Super Bowl over a DPOY any day.

Chris Jones points out that statistics don’t always matter

The casuals always cite the numbers to separate the best from the rest, but that should not only be the parameter for judging a football player’s performance. More often than not, players go under the radar for not recording the numbers, but the film always reveals their influence on the game.

You can’t pay attention to numbers. Team success is the best success. You know what I mean? So, I’m not really a numbers guy. I don’t really care.

The 3x Super Bowl winner pointed out that Jets Quinnen Williams is a good example. Williams’ number doesn’t specify or highlight the constant double teams he has to handle during games. Jones said players with 15 or 16 sacks a year will get more attention, but that doesn’t mean others don’t contribute enough.

It’s still early days, and a lot can happen in the remaining 11 games. The Chiefs enjoyed a bye week, and the first team they will face is the San Francisco 49ers.
