Chris Jones lost track of the Chiefs’ delicate position in the league. He was engrossed in saving the Chiefs’ season by defeating the Los Angeles Chargers.
A win was enough to keep the Chiefs’ playoff dreams alive. The KC franchise went into the halftime break leading by three points before the Chargers pegged back through back-to-back field goals in the third quarter.
Neither team had much impact in the final fifteen minutes, and the score remained unchanged. As a result, the Charges won 16-13.
Jones still had no idea that the Chiefs were out of playoff contention. The All-Pro defensive tackle accidentally blurted, “We still have a chance.”
The reporters were quick to correct him. “Are we out of the playoffs?,” A curious Chris Jones questioned. The gravity of the Chiefs’ position quickly dawned on him.“We are [eliminated]? OK!!!” Jones quipped.

The Chiefs’ odds of qualifying dropped to just 16% following last week’s defeat against the Houston Texans. It scooted to 10% after the Chargers won against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night.
Only a win would have given the Chiefs a fighting chance to secure a wildcard spot. They were already eliminated from winning the AFC West, and now they are out of the playoff race.
Every year is a journey. Success is rented every year… sometimes it doesn’t go the way you plan for it to go. It’s a learning curve.

Jones had a game to forget. He had a minor impact as a pass rusher. While Charles Omenihu and Jaylen Watson combined for three total sacks, Jones capped off with zero sacks and zero tackles.
We understand the fact that in order to be successful, it’s an everyday thing… It’s a consistent thing. We’ve got three more games, and we gotta finish strong still as competitors.

Statistically, Jones has had the worst year (excluding the rookie season) in the Chiefs’ red. In 14 games, he has racked up 22 combined tackles, 8 tackles for loss, 2 pass deflections, and 4 total sacks.
What happened to Chris Jones in the middle of the Chargers game?
Sunday’s game wasn’t devoid of drama. In fact, there were several talking points right from the first drive. With Wanya Morris, Trey Smith, and Jawaan Taylor out nursing their injuries, Andy Reid started a makeshift offensive line of Jaylon Moore, CJ Hanson, and Creed Humphrey.

Moore picked up an injury after the first few plays and was replaced by Chukwuebuka Jason Godrick, who had never taken an NFL snap despite being part of the Chiefs roster for two years. Nick Bolton hobbled off but returned soon after. WR Xavier Worthy was evaluated for a concussion.
The injury bug eventually reached Jones in the third quarter. Jones exited the game following a 2nd & 5 play that resulted in a five-yard pickup for the Chargers. He limped off the field with a sore hamstring.

When asked about the injury, Jones replied,
It’s December… Everyone is battling something… Injury, whether it’s big, small… For me, if I can play, I can play.

Of course, the biggest talking point has to be Patrick Mahomes‘ tearing his ACL late in the fourth quarter. An emotional Jones revealed that he hugged his quarterback.
I just hugged him [Patrick Mahomes], man. That’s my brother. We have been through so much.

Mahomes is likely to miss the final three games of the regular season. The Chiefs are playing for pride and a decent first-round draft position.
