Arguably one of the greatest point-guards to ever play the game, Chris Paul, has been cut off by the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday early morning. An anti-climatic ending for a player who had some of the best years of his career with the club and had recently announced that this season would be his final season in the NBA.
Clippers President of Basketball Operations, Lawrence Frank, announced the same in a statement. Frank expressed:
We are parting ways with Chris and he will no longer be with the team. We will work with him on the next step of his career. Chris is a legendary Clipper who has had a historic career. I want to make one thing very clear. No one is blaming Chris for our underperformance. I accept responsibility for the record we have right now.
It was the veteran’s second stint with the Clippers after spending six seasons in the organization from 2011-17. While he may end his career without an NBA championship, there is no doubt that Chris Paul is a future Hall of Famer of the league. Nicknamed the “Point God”, Paul is currently playing in his 21st season in the NBA.
Paul was restricted to a bench role with the Clippers playing under 15 minutes and averaging just 2.9 points and 3.3 assists per game this campaign. The 40-year-old has been of little help for the franchise as they continue to battle with injuries and are currently languishing at 14th in the Western Conference standings with a 5-16 record despite having players like Kawhi Leonard and James Harden within their ranks.
The exit was initiated by the Clippers and Paul was not informed about it. The guard announced about the decision on his Instagram stories. He wrote:
Just Found Out I’m Being Sent Home.

The reason for the decision is still unclear but NBA fans will be hoping to see the guard back in a new team or else his farewell will be cut short in what is otherwise a legendary career.
C.J. Paul shared his thoughts on Instagram
It is an unceremonious ending for Paul and quite a disappointing decision by the Clippers as Paul cannot be blamed for their run of poor results. It is a sad decision and Clippers nation will not be happy with the way how things have ended with their club legend.

Chris Paul’s older brother, Charles Paul, is a former basketball player himself. Charles never made it into the NBA but played in college basketball for USC Upstate Spartans and Hampton Pirates. The older brother took to social media after Chris’ announcement and reposted the Instagram story.

A breakup nobody saw coming, including Chris Paul and his brother.
Chris Paul calls game to an illustrious career
What hurts the most about this decision is that Paul announced his retirement last week. Irrespective of him not winning a championship, the 40-year-old has had an illustrious 20 years in the NBA.
Paul is a 12-time NBA All-Star, 11-time All-NBA member, nine-time All-Defense member and was the 2006 Rookie of the Year. To top it off, Paul is second in the all-time list for most assists in the league with 12,552 assists to his name, behind only John Stockton.
There may be some teams in the league who will need a veteran’s presence in their locker room such as the San Antonio Spurs, the Houston Rockets who are without Fred Van Vleet, or possibly even the Los Angeles Lakers as Paul shares a good relationship with LeBron James. Only time will tell.
