As a second-year quarterback drafted in the very last round of the 2022 NFL draft, Brock Purdy really came through last season as he led the San Francisco 49ers to the Super Bowl. Even though they fell short in the overtime, one could hardly deny their effort and above all, the quarterback’s potential as the starter.
However, there still remain some analysts who believe the 49ers could have won the Super Bowl, but only if they had another quarterback in the lead. NBC Sports’ Chris Simms believes that if Jordan Love had been the starter, leading the star-studded offense of the Niners, they wouldn’t have failed.
If Jordan Love played in the Super Bowl, the 49ers would be the Super Bowl champions--If you went back [NFC Divisional game], Jordan Love had the 2 interceptions at the end of the game, Jordan Love in that game played better than Brock Purdy. Brock Purdy should have thrown 7 interceptions in that game. He got lucky that night. We’d all be talking differently if Green Bay could catch.Chris Simms said in the latest episode of “Chris Simms Unbuttoned”
After a poor 2-5 start, Love led the Green Bay Packers in an incredible turnaround in the 2023 season, straight to the playoff victory against the Dallas Cowboys. They faced up Purdy’s 49ers in the divisional round but ended up with a 24-21 loss, following two costly throws by Love. In spite of that, Simms picked Love over Purdy.
Chris Simms credits Kyle Shanahan’s coaching genius as the key to 49ers’ triumph
While talking about Purdy’s incompetency, Simms also credited the 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan for dialing up his players’ performance and the triumph in the NFC. He acknowledged Purdy’s improvement in comparison to former quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, but still does not consider him the main reason behind the team’s success.
When the [Kyle] Shanahan Specials are working on all cylinders, there's not a lot that [Brock] Purdy does to bring the offense back up.Chris Simms said
Simms highlighted that due to Shanahan’s brilliancy as a head coach and the 49ers’ strong offense, Purdy’s missed wide-open 30-yard throw went off the chart and was not a big deal. Simms surely has his mind made up about who exactly is the reason behind the 49ers’ success.
