We desperately need him up front: Christian Horner on Sergio Perez

Mercedes delivered a tactical masterclass on Sunday, as Lewis Hamilton finished P1 at the Spanish GP to claim his third win of the season. The Sliver Arrows pitted Lewis Hamilton twice during the race, whereas, Max Verstappen was on a one-stop pit strategy. Although, leading the race, Max was never in control with the old set of tyres.

Lewis Hamilton surpassed the Dutch driver with ease in the latter stages of the race, as Red Bull missed out once again. Christian Horner, Red Bull team principal believes that Sergio Perez needs to be fighting at the front, if they are to devise a competitive strategy. The Mexican finished P5 on Sunday, after starting eighth on the grid.

I think it’s coming together for him,” said Horner, via RaceFans. “He had an off-day on Saturday. “He was compromised in the race behind Daniel, obviously. But then he didn’t manage to make the headway at a track that’s so difficult to pass,” he added.

Of course we desperately need him to be in that gap so that Mercedes don’t have the strategic options that they had today, but I’m convinced that will come for Checo as he finds more confidence and time in the car,” the Briton added.

Sergio Perez was held up by Daniel Ricciardo for vast parts of the race, as the likes of Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton extended their lead at the top. However, when the Mexican did manage to make a move on Daniel Ricciardo, it was a little too late for him.

Christian Horner hopes to have both the cars fighting for the podium in the coming races, so that Mercedes do not have a free pit stop.

The facts are that obviously Checo had been held up,” Horner added. “So the facts are very clear that obviously the two lead guys were so far ahead of the rest of the pack, as it were, and gave Lewis a free stop as he had in Hungary, he’s only got to get it past his team mate that was never going to be an issue, said Horner

So that’s why we need both cars up there strategically so that option isn’t available to Mercedes,” he concluded.
