Ed McCaffrey, former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver and the father of All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey claimed Brock Purdy is a franchise quarterback. McCaffrey’s confidence is a reminder to those analysts who don’t view Purdy as an elite starter despite leading the 49ers to consecutive NFC Championship games and a Super Bowl.

While speaking with Robert Griffin III on the aftermath of Christian becoming the face of Madden 25, Ed McCaffrey claimed the 49ers quarterback is the real deal. He won three Super Bowls playing alongside the likes of Steve Young and John Elway, so he knows a thing or two about what makes a great quarterback.

Oh absolutely. Yeah, he’s going to be playing for the 49ers for a long, long time.'
Ed McCaffrey told Robert Griffin III

He elaborated that some players perform better in the NFL compared to college.

I think Brock has it. I think he has intelligence. He is more mobile than what he would think. And I think that was noticeable last season. He got out of a lot of pressure, rolled up, rolled right and left, stepped up in the pocket, kept his eyes downfield, threw with anticipation.

The Iowa graduate had 39 rushes with the ball and even scored 2 rushing touchdowns.

PFF grades Brock Purdy as the best 20-yard passer in the NFL

The biggest choke point that most detractors point out about Purdy is his apparent inability to throw the ball deep. However, recent PFF statistics chalked off that argument completely.

Purdy completed 30 out of 53 passes on balls thrown 20 or more yards down the field. It resulted in 956 yards, 11 touchdowns, and just 1 interception. Jim Wyman highlighted Purdy received a near-perfect grade (99.9) edging the likes of CJ Stroud (98.6) and Matthew Stafford (97.8). Those who accuse Purdy of not possessing a strong arm need to recheck their scrapbook of stats. On the contrary, Purdy doesn’t appear in the top 10 list for short or intermediate passes.

A popular narrative among Brock Purdy’s detractors is that he gets by on dink-and-dunk passes while letting his skilled teammates do all the work. However, Purdy ranked just 18th in short passing grade (73.0). His deep ball, on the other hand, was nearly perfect, resulting in a seemingly impossible 99.9 mar.
Jim Wyman wrote per Coach Yac on X

Despite the statistics, analysts and fans will continue to doubt his abilities because he was picked last in the NFL draft. Purdy came close to shutting their mouth once and for all but the Chiefs had to be the Grinch to the 49ers Christmas.
