Christian McCaffrey sent a heartfelt message to his brother Luke McCaffrey, who was selected as the 100th overall pick by the Washington Commanders in the 2024 NFL Draft. The Rice graduate was projected to be an early to middle fourth-rounder, so his early pick did come as a surprise.

Not for his All-Pro running back brother because he knows how good Luke can be. Coincidentally, Adam Peters‘ first draft pick for the Carolina Panthers was 27 years old, and Peters’ first pick as working for the Commanders was selecting younger McCaffrey.

Couldn’t be more proud of my brother. What a story! Bet on yourself every step of the way. What a story.

Indeed, an incredible story. Initially, Luke did not start out as a wide receiver. He went to college as a quarterback, later transitioning into a WR after failing to displace the starting QB. In two years with the Owls, Luke McCaffrey finished with 58 receptions for 903 yards in 2022 and, the following year, 992 yards and 12 touchdowns.

The 23-year-old was not the biggest receiver in the draft. However, his 6-foot-2-inch height can be put to good use by the Washington Commanders. They already have Jahan Dotson and Terry McLaurin, who, despite an underwhelming 2023, managed to catch the eye of the critics.

McCaffrey adds a different dimension for the commanders. He is a very good slot receiver with nimble feet and soft hands.

Big slot target who comes from high-end NFL bloodlines and who showed noticeable improvement in his second season at the position.
NFL.com’s draft expert, Lance Zierlein, mentioned

He may not be as tall as his Super Bowl-winning father, Ed McCaffrey, or the explosive nature of Christian, which earned him the Offensive Player of the Year award. However, he is a very good traditional wide receiver.

He catches with soft hands, great focus and extreme toughness.

Alongside Luke, the Commanders drafted Heisman winner Jayden Daniels as their new franchise quarterback. Furthermore, they acquired an Illinois defensive tackle, Jer’Zhan Newton, as 36th overall, Michigan cornerback Mike Sainristil at 50, Kansas State tight end Ben Sinnott at 53, and TCU guard Brandon Coleman at 67.

With new head coach Dan Quinn pulling the strings, it will be interesting to see how the Commanders fare in 2024. They should at least aim to finish with a winning record, which they last managed back in 2015.
