The running back market is once again dominated by Christian McCaffrey. Despite the tragic Super Bowl loss, one cannot deny McCaffrey had a phenomenal season winning Offensive Player of the Year and being the top non-QB runner-up for NFL MVP honors.
When it finally came the chance to reward him, the San Francisco 49ers surely didn’t hesitate. Sources told ESPN‘s Adam Schefter revealed that McCaffrey has signed a two-year extension worth $38 million, including a guaranteed $24 million. He will make an average of $19 million per year, as negotiated by WME Football.
After signing this new deal, the two-time NFL All-Pro, who missed the voluntary offseason program, will now attend the mandatory training camp. Before this, McCaffrey already dominated the running back market with his previous contract of 2020 with the Carolina Panthers averaging $16.6 million per year.
However, that didn’t include any guaranteed money therefore the star RB was set to earn $11.8 million and $12 million in 2025. But after signing the two-year extension, he is secured to be with the Niners through the 2027 season.
McCaffrey is known for being the NFL’s most versatile player and the first player to record more than 1,000 rushing yards and 500 receiving yards in all of his ten seasons. Last season, he posted 2,023 yards along with 21 touchdowns.
While the Niners sorted the extension of McCaffrey, who still had two seasons left in his previous contract, the situation of Brandon Aiyuk has become more serious. Given, that he hasn’t appeared in any offseason program while awaiting a long-term contract and is subject to pay fine of $104,000 if he remains inactive in the next three days.
Fans react to Christian McCaffrey’s lucrative deal
The reigning Offensive Player of the Year, who was already the highest running back in the league, has now raised the stakes even higher. That’s why fans are overjoyed with this lucrative contract, referring to it as well deserved. One fan wrote, “Every penny is worth it tbh,” another wrote, “No other rb is getting that kind of money for the foreseeable future.” Here are some of the fan reactions:
Fans appreciated the Niners for this move and also highlighted there is no other running back in the league who would receive such a lucrative deal. However, some wonder what it says for Aiyuk’s situation which is on its way to become an emergency for the franchise.
