On Thursday, the baseball world lost one of its most beloved members as legendary broadcaster Bob Uecker passed away. The baseball Hall of Famer died at the age of 90. Uecker made his debut in the league in 1962 for the Milwaukee Braves, six years after spending time in the minor league. Across his short career, he served as a backup catcher and also played for the St. Louis Cardinals, Philadelphia Phillies and the Atlanta Braves till 1967.
In 1971 he joined the Brewers broadcast team, where he made a huge name for himself. He went on to spend five decades with the team as their leading voice while going down as one of the greatest to ever call the game. He was dubbed “Mr. Baseball” by TV talk show host Johnny Carson.
Yelich had developed a good relationship with Uecker. Following his death after losing his battle with cancer on Thursday, the 33-year-old penned down an emotional note regarding him. In his post on social media, Yelich shared images with Uecker and claimed that he will miss him.
After the Milwaukee Brewers were eliminated from the 2024 postseason by the New York Mets, Yelich was left emotional while speaking regarding Bob Uecker. In the post-media greet inside the clubhouse, the left fielder expressed how it was special to have him around the clubhouse every year and that they should not take it for granted.
Former MLB Commissioner Bud Selig comments on Bob Uecker passing away
Former MLB Commissioner Bud Selig was left heartbroken by the loss of Bob Uecker. The ex-owner of the Milwaukee Brewers claimed that he was unable to describe how much Uecker meant to him and the state of Wisconsin.
He would later join the MLB Tonight Show to reflect on Uecker’s life. During this, Selig pointed out that Uecker was a “baseball guy” and was just remarkable.
Selig went on to describe how he hired Uecker in 1971 as the commentator for the team. The former Commissioner added that he would often go back to the 9th innings of the games that they were winning to hear his emotions.
