Joe Gibbs Racing’s Christopher Bell has been the team’s best performer under playoffs pressure in the last three years of the Next-Gen era, producing consistent runs. But after the first two post-season races of the 2025 season, he seems have missing the charm while teammates Denny Hamlin and Chase Briscoe are delivering results.

Christopher Bell had to settle for finishes outside the top-5, despite driving the fastest car of the week while Chase Briscoe won at Darlington and Denny Hamlin won at Gateway. The No:20 team hasn’t been on the victory lane since race week-4, which marked his third consecutive win of the season, unfortunately the last of the season as well.

Talking about this disappointing streak, the TRD driver pointed out that the barometer for his performance are his teammates. He then admitted that watching himself struggle while they are in the victory lane is tough as he isn’t being able to maximize the potential of the superior equipment’s they have for the race week. What’s more disheartening is the fact that he hasn’t come close event fighting for the wins, these weeks.

I’m happy for my teammates, but that’s the barometer. And if your teammates are out there winning races and leading laps, that shows that the cars are capable. We have the equipment. And I haven’t been leading laps and I haven’t been winning races, so there’s obviously something going on that’s keeping us from from doing that.

Talking about the same, the No:20 Toyota team crew chief Adam Stevens, who has been under pressure just like his driver, admitted that they have failed to win races despite having fast cars owing to subpar execution. He understands it is tough to win races consistently even with the dominant cars in the highly competitive Next-Gen era.

You just have to go track by track and week by week, and I don’t really think there’s a recurring thing there. To your point, we’ve had speed. We’ve suffered in execution here and there. And there’s lots of races and lots of tracks on the schedule, so you’ve got to take it all in stride.  There’s 37 weekends if you count the All-Star Race, and you’re not going to win them all.

Christopher Bell and team have eyes on the prize in 2025

In a separate conversation, the Joe Gibbs Racing crew chief shared his thoughts on the goals they have set for the 2025 Cup season. He admitted that winning the title has always been their primary objective in the season, and despite the drop in form recently, the goals haven’t been changed for them, as he knew they are fast enough.

When we sit down and set our goals for the season, top of the sheet is to win the championship. And there’s nothing that’s happened at any point in time that’s taken that goal away. So, it’s still right there in front of us. We have the cars. We have the speed. We have the driver and the team to do it, so eyes on the prize.

The comments from the veteran team leader shows they are working hard behind the scene to get team back on track and back on the victory lane. They just have to execute better on and of the track, starting from Bristol this Saturday night. It would be interesting to see how everything is going to playout for the No:20 team.
