It’s Joe Burrow versus Josh Allen in the NFL this week. Hailee Steinfeld’s heartthrob husband meet for the third time. Burrow first met Allen in the 2023 AFC Divisional Playoff and knocked him and the Bills out. Later that year, in the new season, Allen and Burrow came face-to-face once again, and once again, the Bengals had the final laugh.

As the two teams meet on Sunday, they are both coming off huge wins. The Bengals, aided by Burrow’s return from injury, silenced the Ravens and Lamar Jackson, while the Bills took out the Bengals and Ravens’ divisional rival Pittsburgh Steelers. The Bills have re-emerged as Super Bowl contenders, and the Bengals, despite their miserable record, have given their fans playoff hopes.

The Bills are 8-4 and occupy the seventh and final wildcard spot. The Bills face heat from the Texans, who have become a force to reckon with in the past weeks. Meanwhile, the Bengals, with 4-8, are down in twelfth spot behind the Miami Dolphins (5-7). Their chances to make the playoffs through the wildcard spots are negligible, if any.

The Bills and the Bengals have met 34 times, and both have won 17 times each. The Bengals have defeated the Bills in the last two contests. The last time the Bills defeated the Bengals was in 2019, when Allen beat the Andy Dalton-led Bengals 21-17 at Highmark Stadium.

Why can the Bengals win?

The Bengals are 4-8, and they need to win all of their remaining games to have an inkling of a chance to make the playoffs. The AFC North has been terrible this year, and the divisional title may be contested until the last week. The Ravens are currently leading with a 6-6 record, and the Steelers share the same.

They are desperate for playoffs, and it would be their first in two years if they make it. With Joe Burrow on the team and Tee Higgins potentially coming off a concussion, the Bengals’ offense is racing to match the prime levels from last year. A sensational Burrow completed 24-of-46 passes and threw for 261 yards and two touchdowns against the mighty Ravens last week. That was a huge win, and the Bengals might just carry that moment to overwhelm the Bills’ paltry defense on Sunday.

The Bengals can take advantage of the Bills’ run defense. They have gotten better in the past two games, but there’s still a concern about consistency. The Texans and the Steelers combined for just 166 rushing yards, with 79 of that coming in the first half at Houston. However, taking most of the season into account, the run defense has been paltry. They still rank 30th with a yield of 141.3 yards, 31st at 5.2 yards per attempt, and they have allowed the second-most runs of at least 10 yards (51).

Why can the Bills win?

The Buffalo Bills are Super Bowl contenders, and Josh Allen is one of the key reasons for it. It was only three weeks ago that he became the first quarterback in history to record three passing and rushing touchdowns each in multiple games. It was two weeks ago that he surpassed Cam Newton for the title of most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback.

The reigning MVP might not be leading the charts, but he has proven to be dangerous. Allen is known for being cunning with the ball and the plays he makes.

James Cook

The Bills also have the assistance of the second-best rusher this season. James Cook trails Jonathan Taylor by just 54 yards. Cook has recorded 1,228 yards, while the Bills boast the best rushing offense in the league and rank second overall.

The Bills’ defense has been a problem for the team the whole season. However, they have shown immense improvement in the last two games. The Bengals would be a test for them to prove the two games weren’t an outlier but the result of being better every week heading into the playoffs.
