Serena Williams will kick-off her campaign at the Cincinnati Open 2020 against qualifier Arantxa Rus of Netherlands in a Round of 32 match. While World No.9 and third-seeded Serena got a first-round bye, the 29-year old Rus had to go through the qualifiers to enter into the main draw. In the first round, the left-handed Dutch got the better of Germany’s Alison Van Vytvanch in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.

By her own standards, Williams has had a quiet season so far. The 38-year old American won the ASB Classic, her first WTA title since winning the Australian Open in 2017. However, Serena shockingly lost in the third round in Melbourne this year, going down to Wang Qiang of China 4-6, 7-6, 5-7. In comparison, Rus reached the second round at the first and the only Grand Slam of 2020 so far.

Serena Williams

It should not be a difficult match for the 23-time Grand Slam champion and she should easily sail in the next round. Moreover, Serena is a local lad and understands the playing conditions like the back of her hand. However, Serena should be vary of the momentum that the Dutch is carrying while winning three matches on the trot at the Cincinnati Open. That said, the match should not go to the distance.

Match Prediction: Serena Williams defeats Arantxa Rus in straight sets within an hour.
