Frances Tiafoe wants to make use of the home advantage as much as possible. He is playing in his fourth tournament since the start of the North American hardcourt swing.

His semifinal opponent, Holger Rune, however, has match practice on just one hard-court tournament following the German Open during which, he suffered a knee injury and later decided not to play at the Paris Olympics due to a wrist injury.

He started his run on the hard court for the second time this season at the Canadian Open but was knocked out of the fourth round. The Dane has now reached his first semifinal since the Bavarian International in April this year.

Frances Tiafoe vs. Holger Rune: Match Preview

As mentioned before, the unseeded Frances Tiafoe is playing in his fourth tournament on the hard courts of North America. Before the Cincinnati Masters, the 26-year-old featured in the Atlanta Open, Citi Open, and the Canadian Open.

Although he failed in his opening match in Montreal, Tiafoe advanced to the quarterfinals and semifinals in Atlanta and Washington respectively. At the Cincinnati Open, except for his fourth-round match against Jiri Lehecka, the World No. 27 has won all his matches in straight sets. He received a walkover from Hubert Hurkacz in the previous round.

Holger Rune, on the other hand, played two three-set matches before progressing to the last four. In the quarterfinals, the 15th seed knocked out Jack Draper in straight sets. Rune is still searching for his first title of the season and played just one final at the Brisbane Open in January this year.

Like Holger Rune, even Frances Tiafoe has not won a title this season. The American will be meeting the World No. 16 for the first time on the ATP Tour.

Although Rune stands way ahead in the ATP Rankings table, it’s Tiafoe who has got the rhythm on the hard courts, thanks to his previous three tournaments on the surface. Which is why, Rune, one of the promising youngsters on the tour right now, won’t be entering the match as a favorite.
