Fourth seed Elena Rybakina returns to action this week at the Cincinnati Open. It’s been more than a month since tennis fans last saw the Kazakh player in action.
The 25-year-old was last seen at Wimbledon, where she lost in the semi-finals to eventual champion Barbora Krejcikova. Due to illness, she missed out on playing in the Paris Olympics.
She returns to action in the Round of 32 against Leylah Fernandez, who seems to be enjoying the best form of her career. The Canadian reached the finals in Eastbourne and has been competing in both singles and doubles at the National Bank Open and the Cincinnati Open.

Leylah Fernandez vs. Elena Rybakina: Match Preview
There is no question as to who is the more match-fit player between Leylah Fernandez and Elena Rybakina. Fernandez played in five tournaments after Roland Garros before the Cincinnati Open.

She reached the quarterfinals of the Birmingham Classic and then made it to the finals in Eastbourne. She lost a very close battle against Caroline Wozniacki in the second round of Wimbledon.
At the National Bank Open, she reached the Round of 32 in singles and made it to the semi-finals in women’s doubles, partnering with her sister, Bianca Jolie Fernandez. On the other hand, Rybakina made it to the semi-finals of Wimbledon. However, she couldn’t replicate the heroics that won her first Grand Slam title at SW19 two years ago.
Leylah Fernandez vs. Elena Rybakina: Match Prediction
Elena Rybakina has compiled a 40-8 win-loss record in 2024, which is far better than her Cincinnati opponent, Leylah Fernandez (22-17). Moreover, the fourth seed won the only meeting they’ve had in their careers in Doha.

However, matches are not decided on sentiments. Therefore, Fernandez will feel that she has every chance of causing a major upset at the Cincinnati Open.
The good thing for Rybakina is that she won’t have to experience the transition that most players are facing from the clay of the Paris Olympics to the hard courts of North America. Hence, despite the lack of matches, she has the edge over the Canadian in their Round of 32 encounter.
Prediction: Elena Rybakina in three sets.
