American qualifier Taylor Townsend will face ninth seed Daria Kasatkina for a place in the third round of the Cincinnati Open. Townsend has been one of the major standout players during this summer’s hard court swing. She reached her maiden singles Masters 1000 quarterfinals at the Canadian Open and is yet to drop a set in Cincinnati.
Kasatkina won her first match in August beating compatriot Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-4, 6-2 in the first round of the Cincinnati Open. She had failed to win a match at both the Citi Open and the Canadian Open. But with her good performances on hard court this season, it is hard to write her off despite her poor form.

Taylor Townsend is regarded as a doubles specialist by all standards and has won three doubles titles this season, including Wimbledon alongside her partner Katerina Siniakova. She struggled to replicate her doubles form in the singles. The 28-year-old has failed to win a singles match from May to July.
Townsend reached the Round of 16 at the Citi Open, where she lost to Marie Bouzkova. At the Canadian Open, she won all her qualifying matches without dropping a set. She went on to beat Jelena Ostapenko in the Round of 16 before losing to Emma Navarro in straight sets in the quarterfinals. In Cincinnati, she began her campaign with a 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(7) win against Caroline Dolehide.
On the other hand, Daria Kasatkina looks to be struggling following her transition from grass to hard court. She exited the Citi Open and Canadian Open without winning a match. That said, she has been to four finals this season, with three of them on hard courts. She reached her first final of the year at the Adelaide International, where she lost to 6-3, 6-2 to Ostapenko.
In Abu Dhabi, she lost the title to Elena Rybakina. After a poor Sunshine Double, she lost the Charleston title to Danielle Collins in three sets. She won her first match of the month in Cincinnati, beating Ekaterina Alexandrova in straight sets.

Taylor Townsend will be hoping to achieve yet another Masters 1000 quarterfinals, which will boost her morale ahead of the US Open. But Kasatkina will be an easy matchup for the American. They have played each other only once, with Kasatkina winning in straight sets at the 2022 Silicon Valley Classic.
Kasatkina will hope to build her confidence with a victory after two early losses at the Citi Open and in Montreal. She has good experience on hard courts and could end up getting the better of the American and move to the next round in Cincinnati.
