Canadian Open champion Ben Shelton will take on Alexander Zverev in the quarter-finals of the Cincinnati Open. The American star has never beaten the World No.3 in their last three meetings on the court. With his current red-hot form, he will hope to break the jinx when they meet at the outdoor hard court in Ohio.

Zverev has won 42 of his 56 matches this season and despite not playing at his best form, he won the Munich Open in April. He has finished as a runner-up in two events this season, first at the Australian Open and then at the Stuttgart Open. Against Shelton, he will be looking to earn his 43rd win of the year.

Ben Shelton vs. Alexander Zverev: Match Preview

Ben Shelton has been one of the most standout players on tour since the start of the North American hard-court swing. He reached the semi-finals of the Citi Open, where he lost to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. He followed that with a triumph at Toronto, claiming his first ATP Masters title.

In Cincinnati, he opened his account with a win over Camilo Ugo Carabelli via retirement. He then powered past Spanish star Roberto Bautista Agut 7-6(3), 6-4. In the round of 16, he faced Czech Republic star Jiri Lehecka. Though the 22nd seed played a great game, the American star won the match 6-4, 6-4.

On the other hand, Alexander Zverev has endured a topsy-turvy season by his standards. After reaching the Australian Open final, he managed to reach only two finals, which saw him drop to World No.3 in the ATP rankings. However, he has been in good form in the second half of the season, reaching the semi-finals of the Canadian Open.

He opened his account at Cincinnati with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Nishesh Basavareddy in the second round after a first-round bye. He went on to overcome American Brandon Nakashima in straight sets before facing Karen Khachanov in the fourth round. Fortunately for the German star, the Russian star retired in the second set.

Ben Shelton vs. Alexander Zverev: Match Prediction

Ben Shelton holds a standout 35-16 win-loss record on tour this season, which will surely go down as his best since turning pro in 2022. The American entered the Cincinnati Open at the back of winning the Canadian Open and he’s yet to drop a set at the ATP Masters tournament. However, in his three meetings with Zverev, the 22-year-old has failed to win any.

Their last clash was at the Stuttgart Open semifinal, where Zverev claimed a 7-6(8), 7-6(1) win to reach the final. Also, he has faced Shelton twice this season, and he’s yet to drop a set against the World No.6. Nonetheless, the German star has won 18 of his 23 matches on hard courts, which is decent form by all standards.

Shelton and Zverev will go all in to win the quarter-finals tie, despite the one-sided head-to-head record. The former has the advantage, considering his form, and he’s the only American player in the draw, which gives him the backing of the home crowd. With tricky serve and left-hand forehand shots, he’s able to knock out the World No.3.

Match Prediction: Ben Shelton to win in three sets.
