The first-round match between Coco Gauff and Maria Sakkari was a thriller. Maria Sakkari won 6-1 6-3 against Coco Gauff in just over an hour.
The duo faced off for the first time at the WTA tour. While Coco had a fine beginning to resume the tour. She reached the Semis at the Top Seed Open. On the other hand, Sakkari has only won 9 of the 16 matches she played.

It seemed that the American teenager at the Cincinnati court was a different person from who reached the semi-finals at Lexington. The 16-year-old was unable to hold serve and gave easy points to Sakkari.

Gauff was 0-3 down before she could hold her first service game. However, it was too late for a comeback in this set. Sakkari served well and restricted her double faults.

The Greek player looked highly determined to not let go of her lead. Gauff started off the second set with a hold. Maria gave an eye for an eye and held onto her serve. She went onto break Gauff in the next game.
The next service game from Skkari was a treat to the eyes, she gave Gauff no points and a cherry on the top of the cake was her ace. As Sakkari lead 3-1, in the next game, Gauff made a hold trailing 2-3.
The teenager had the potential to win the second set and take the match into a third. There were points such as at 3-2 when Gauff did not give up. She made Sakkari work hard for the hold and saved two breakpoints. Unfortunately for Gauff, Sakkari had the upper hand today.
Ultimately, Sakkari gave only another game to Gauff at her serve. The Greek went on to win 6-3 breaking Coco Gauff’s serve once again.
