Houston Texans quarterback CJ Stroud drew attention on Saturday morning for a small fashion detail. Hours before leading the Texans to a 20-3 preseason victory over the Carolina Panthers, the Pro Bowl signal-caller arrived at the stadium wearing a Seattle Mariners’ cap.
The issue? The Mariners are currently chasing the Houston Astros in the heated American League West race, making them a divisional rival. Social media erupted when images of Stroud in the hat surfaced, with some fans jokingly calling for the Texans to “trade him” simply because of the logo.
Even the Mariners’ official account joined the fun, complimenting Stroud for “looking good” in their colors.
Later, Stroud laughed off the controversy, making it clear the cap was about fashion rather than fandom.
I love hats, I wear hats all the time. It’s all about the swag, baby. I’m just kidding.
CJ Stroud explained with a cheeky grin
Stroud added that he supports both the Houston Astros and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Stroud grew up in San Bernardino County and went to school in Rancho Cucamonga, an hour away from Dodger Stadium. Furthermore, he admitted that he owns caps from “probably every team,” reinforcing the idea that his choice was purely stylistic.

CJ Stroud led the Texans to a preseason win over his childhood friend’s club
The Houston Texans secured their first win of the preseason after loss to the Minnesota Vikings. The Texans silenced the Carolina Panthers as the latter scrambled to put any points on the scoresheet against a dominant defense.

Although he drew ire from the home fans, Stroud was all game the moment it commenced. Once the game started, Stroud silenced any outside noise. He completed 6 of 8 passes for 44 yards and tossed a touchdown to Nico Collins in the first quarter, setting a confident tone for Houston’s preseason.
Collins has slowly become an integral part of the Texans’ offense. He is their top receiving option, coming off back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. Last year, he led the team with 68 catches for 1,006 yards and seven touchdowns despite missing five games due to injury.
Nick Chubb made his Texans debut with five carries for 25 yards. After seven years in Cleveland, Chubb now joins a Houston backfield that is temporarily without Joe Mixon. Mixon is recovering from an offseason foot injury. The Texans are using Chubb alongside the starters in the early stages of preseason, suggesting that he will have a key role in the rotation.
Quarterback CJ Stroud, who has already guided Houston to the playoffs in each of his first two seasons, will operate under a new offensive system this year. The team hired Nick Caley, formerly of the Patriots and Rams, to replace Bobby Slowik as offensive coordinator. The change comes after a season marred by claims of boring and slow wins as well as questions about Stroud’s postseason record.
On the opposite side, the Panthers struggled. The Panthers had a perplexing evening as quarterback Bryce Young ended up playing only six plays before he was called back by head coach Dave Canales. Backup Andy Dalton sustained an elbow injury, and that brought in a third-string undrafted quarterback who somehow managed to showcase one of the rare flashes of brilliance from the Panthers offense.
They couldn’t establish a run game after being consistently stopped by the Texans. The Texans defense, on the other hand, are once again shaping up to be a top ten defensive unit.
The Carolina Panthers and Houston Texans have one more game left in the preseason before the season opener. The Panthers will play the Pittsburgh Steelers while the Texans take on the reigning NFC top seed, Detroit Lions.
