In Short
  • Kendrick Perkins accused LeBron James of seeking media attention with his comments about his future.
  • Fans criticized Perkins for hypocrisy, noting ESPN frequently discusses LeBron regardless of his actions.
  • Colin Cowherd suggested LeBron's remarks were a subtle critique of Lakers GM Rob Pelinka's roster decisions.

The Conference Finals are in session, and no one can argue that the games are exciting. Despite that, LeBron James and his future with the Los Angeles Lakers are always under discussion.

As the de facto ‘Face of the NBA,’ that is expected. The Akron native has said in the past that he has embraced it and also acknowledged the pitfalls of it.

Time and again, the conversations surrounding him are what create lengthy debates on any form of media, and that is what some have found to be disrespectful, especially when basketball has proved to be good enough to be talked about.

Charles Barkley has slammed ESPN multiple times for talking about the King and his team over and over. Close friend and the network’s face, Stephen A. Smith, has reiterated to him that they do so because the four-time champion and the Lakers draw ratings.

We took the bait. He threw his fishing pole out there… He caught the attention that he wanted… I’ve known Bron all my life. He moves like the President. He already has a plan in place… This right here was just throwing the bait out to get some more national media attention real quick to get people talking about him.

Kendrick Perkins said on First Take

Perkins is claiming that, just like last season, his former teammate is back at it, leaving the media with something to talk about daily. The only problem was that fans felt this was as hypocritical as it could get.

Fans tear into Kendrick Perkins for hypocritical LeBron James ‘bait’ theory

Fans took to social media to remind Kendrick Perkins that his network, ESPN, is a master of talking about LeBron James or the Lakers daily.

Even though the 41-year-old’s recent comments about waiting until August were covered the previous day on multiple network shows, they chose to continue talking about it.

Fans felt that the media are the ones who talk about the four-time champion or his team, even though there are plenty of other topics to discuss. They flamed Perkins for his ‘hypocritical’ comment, examples of which are below.

LeBron James spoke about his intent to wait and decide on his Los Angeles Lakers future on his podcast. Fans believe that since it was his first appearance on any media platform since being swept by OKC, he had every right to do so.

But Perkins and his colleagues have been talking about the four-time Finals MVP nonstop since James’ last press conference. Therefore, it is they who are baiting viewers every day rather than the other way around.

LeBron James was pointing fingers at Rob Pelinka, says Colin Cowherd

While Perkins called out his former close friend, another analyst, Colin Cowherd, decided to dissect what LeBron James meant from his recent comments.

That’s a not-so-thinly veiled shot at the guy who built the roster, Rob Pelinka… Don’t kid yourselves, LeBron knows exactly where he’s going.

Colin Cowherd said on The Herd

The 62-year-old was hooked on the term ‘they out-talented us’ used by the superstar forward in his most recent podcast appearance. Cowherd believes that not only did the four-time league MVP protect JJ Redick and some of the players he likes, but he also sent a message to the new owners.

The analyst pointed out that Rob Pelinka is an old-school agent who may not be suited to the current NBA, where the salary cap forces executives to maximize talent on every dollar spent.

Even though he was praised for bringing in Luka Doncic, Pelinka’s team is miles away from the true contenders in the NBA. That is what he believes LeBron James was hinting at.
