From reliever to starter – Clay Holmes leaves the Bronx behind to join their cross-city rivals New York Mets following a 3-year $38 million deal. While being the Yankees pitcher, Holmes acted as their reliever but was even stripped down from his role due to his slumping performance.
However, with the new team, Holmes is ready to start a new chapter as their starter. If by chance, he fails to come out of his slump he’ll act as a supporter for closer Edwin Diaz. There’s always an option for calling him to the bullpen, but for now, the Mets will see how things progress.
Last season, Clay Holmes made 67 relief appearances for the pinstripes before being pulled out. He posted a score of 3.14 ERA and throughout the postseason, made 12 appearances. While his recent performances have been shaky, the NY Mets are hoping to revive his talent once again.
They are hoping to get three different pitches from the 31-year-old in rotation during the games. Since losing Sean Manaea, Luis Severino, and Jose Quintana to free agency, the team is hoping to replenish their lost power with the addition of Holmes, and Frankie Montas.
Right-hander Clay Holmes and the New York Mets are in agreement on a three-year, $38 million contract with an opt-out after the second year, sources tell ESPN. Mets plan to turn Holmes, who has spent his big league career as a RP, into a starter. On the news: @Joelsherman1.

The trade caught internet attention as both the Mets and Yankees are currently in a head-to-head battle for Juan Soto. Amidst the chaos, the Mets managed to snatch pitcher Clay Homles for their roster.

Dude spent half his time walking a tightrope and last year he fell off it more often than he made it across. I wish him nothing but the best, but I think the move to starter is going to be a disaster for him.

I don’t hate the guy. I feel bad for the Mets post all-star break.

Clay started off with the Yankees as a tremendous asset but as time went on he became a tremendous liability with his shaky performances in relief.

The NY Mets are known for their aggressive persuasion in free agency. They have acquired Holmes from the pinstripes, but whether they’ll also be able to add superstar free agent Juan Soto from them is yet to be seen. The MLB world is waiting for the final update from Soto and his agent Scott Boras prior to the Winter Meetings.
