Is another ex-New York Yankees pitcher going to join New York Mets? A day after the Mets agreed on terms with former Yankee pitcher Frankie Montas to a two-year deal, reports have now emerged that Clay Holmes is drawing interest from several teams including the Mets.

The Mets have seen some of their starting pitchers test free agency this year. This has left the team with fewer options in the bullpen. As per a report from Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the cross-town rivals of the Yankees are hoping to bring in Holmes and make him a starter.

The major thing here is that Holmes does not have much experience as a starter pitching in the big leagues. In his career, the 31-year-old has only made four starts in the MLB. All of them came while he was a rookie for the Pittsburgh Pirates. However, he did play as a starter in his minor league tenure.

In recent seasons, several teams have aggressively glanced at relievers and turned them back into starting pitchers. During the 2024 season, stars like Seth Lugo, Michael King, Reynaldo Lopez, and Zack Littell enjoyed great success while being converted back to starters.

Holmes did not enjoy the best of the year in the 2024 season. Despite being named an All-Star for the second time in his career, he had the most blown saves (13) in the league. He even lost out his closer spot to Luis Gil. After his contract expired, he became a free agent.

New York Mets inquire about LA Dodgers World Series hero to bolster pitching rotation

After losing in the National League Championship Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets GM David Stearns claimed that the team would take an aggressive approach in the free agency. The team is now reported to have also inquired about the Dodgers’ World Series hero, Walker Buehler.

The two-time World Series winner struggled in the regular season after coming back from an injury. However, in the postseason, Buehler came back in form. His performance in Game 3 of the World Series against the New York Yankees received huge applause.

Buehler later showed off his skill as a potential reliever as well. He would earn the World Series winning save in Game 5 when he came out to pitch in Game 5. Despite that, he will likely continue as a starting pitcher.

As per reports from Joel Sherman, these performances have sparked an interest from the Mets. The insider did claim that the market for Buehler is “deep” as many teams are interested in acquiring his services.

As of now, the Mets have a starting rotation consisting of Kodai Senga, David PetersonTylor Megill, and Paul Blackburn. While the addition of Frankie Montas does bring in some experience, the signing of Buehler could have a much better impact on this rotation. Who will the Mets eventually sign for their rotation, remains to be seen for now.
