He wanted to race in the Daytona 500, which his mentor was against as he knew there was no chance will get to that level.
When I first started to want to do this NASCAR thing with Biff [Greg Biffle], I was like, ‘I want to race Cup, I want to race the Daytona 500 next year.’ And he’s like, ‘No, you can’t do that.’ I didn’t understand that at all.

After tasting how tough third tier racing is on his Truck Series debut at Daytona, Cleetus McFarland understood the talent gap between him and the elite drivers. This has killed any desire he had about racing in the top-tier as he knows there isn’t any change that he can be competitive in those Cup Series events.
Now that I’m in this, I don’t want to race Cup at all. Like, that’s terrifying to me. The gap between my skill and those guys is massive, and I know that…I had no desire to race in this series either.

Cleetus McFarland shares his love for ARCA racing
Further talking about racing on the same interview, the racer shared his love for the ARCA series and how the competition is relatively easy for him to be part of. He also explained that he signed the RCR deal despite the skill gap because it wasn’t an opportunity he could pass up.

I love ARCA, I’m like ARCA’s No. 1 fan. It’s so fun, we don’t have to be rushed through our pit stops, the competition is relatively easy for me to keep up with right now. But I’m not gonna turn down this opportunity, so here I am. This O’Reilly thing takes way more skill than anything I’ve ever done.
Cleetus McFarland said.
Furthermore, he asserted that he is doing everything he can behind the scene to learn the skills require to run in the top divisions of NASCAR. It’s an impossible sounding task, but he is still trying to make it happen.
Like I said, I’ve put myself in the position where it’s all up to me, and I don’t have the skill to back it up, but I’m doing my best to obtain that skill as fast as possible. I know that sounds impossible, but I’m gonna try my damnedest to do it.
Cleetus McFarland added.
The comments from the racer are rational and shows how he understands the criticism against him over lack of experience are on point. It would be interesting to see how everything is going to playout for the racer in the coming days.
