December 2025 witnessed one of biggest tragedies in NASCAR history. Hall of Famer Greg Biffle died in a tragic plane crash, alongside seven co-passengers that involved his family. It was a tough pill to swallow for the whole community as Biffle was one of the most respected figures in the community with his humanitarian efforts as well racing etiquette he showed over the years.

One racer that was affected the most with the tragedy was YouTuber turned racer Cleetus McFarland (real name Garrett Mitchell). Greg Biffle was the mentor of the racer, who is slowing establishing himself in ARCA series and the veteran’s family was flying to Florida to meet the Mitchell when the tragedy struck. It affected McFarland so much that he thought about quitting NASCAR as a whole.

Greg Biffle, my mentor, passed away last month, so things are going to be a lot different. I’ll admit to you guys that a month ago when everything happened, I didn’t want to ever step foot in a NASCAR garage again.

Cleetus McFarland said on his YouTube channel.

Loosing a close find and mentor puts anyone in a difficult sport like what McFarland found himself in. He didn’t want to race after the tragedy but after some time he realized, if he quit NASCAR over this, Biffle would not be happy with him. So, he decided to honor the veteran’s glory by climbing the racing ladder with his blessings.

I didn’t want to race. Now that some time has passed. I have realized what would The Biff want. He would want me to continue racing and trying to climb the ladder in NASCAR.

One of the biggest goals for McFarland when he started his racing journey was to one day race in the Daytona 500. Greg Biffle reminded him that getting there won’t be easy and that he has to earn his seat in the top tier by putting in serious effort.

When Biff and I originally talked about racing NASCAR, I told him I wanted to race the Daytona 500. He kind of politely told me that that’s not gonna happen without doing some serious work, so we started a plan of getting to the Daytona 500.

Cleetus McFarland said.

Hence, they come up with a plan that saw them start in the ARCA series and slowly goes up by making selected appearance in the Truck and O’Reilly Series. He is prepared to compete this mission, honoring the memories of his late mentor.

Knowing we had to be in ARCA, and then likely Truck, and then maybe the O’Reilly Series, and then Cup. You can’t just go race the Daytona 500 … now I am prepared to complete that mission.

Cleetus McFarland added.

Greg Biffle would have been disappointed with McFarland if he had quit and the best way for him to honor the racing legend is the finish the mission they started together. It would be interesting to see how the 2025 season is going to pan out for the NASCAR entertainer.
