At 46, CM Punk is one of the mainstays of WWE programming at the moment. Earlier this year, ‘The Best in the World’ lived his dream of all dreams by main-eventing Night 1 of WrestleMania 41. However, it was a bittersweet experience for the Chicagoan as he got betrayed by Paul Heyman, who was pretending to be his best friend.

Punk was recently asked about that moment by Matt Aguilar of ComicBook, given that ‘The Second City Saint’ has now had enough time to reflect on Heyman’s double-crossing of him. The former AEW star quipped that it wasn’t the first instance of Heyman stabbing him in the back.

Back in 2013, ‘The Oracle’ stopped his former client from grabbing the Money in the Bank briefcase, and it ruptured their long-standing ties. He then aligned with Brock Lesnar which led to a blockbuster outing between the two at SummerSlam.

Being able to work with the top talkers, wrestlers, minds in the industry has just rejuvenated me as a whole. So anytime I get to work with Paul, Roman, even Seth. Guys like that they tend to bring the best out of me, and in turn, I feel like I bring the best out of them.

So one could deduce that he hasn’t learned his lessons, joked Punk. That being said, the former world champion segued into his current mindset in WWE. ‘The Cookie Master’ affirmed that whatever he’s doing on a weekly basis on WWE television is nothing but a dream come true. Since he’s unsure about how much time he has left inside that squared circle, Punk wants to squeeze the most out of it.

He’s almost two years into his epic return to the company that he planned in November 2023. In the aforementioned interview, Punk also claimed that he’s feeling rejuvenated by working with other top stars in WWE, be it Roman Reigns or even Seth Rollins, for that matter.

Punk obviously couldn’t have missed out on giving Heyman a nod as well, which he did. Their on-screen chemistry has been off the charts, and the fans relished it during this past WrestleMania season. In fact, it was ‘The Wiseman’ who was entrusted with the onus to inform Punk about closing out Mania in Vegas.

CM Punk reveals what it took to come up with a diss track for John Cena

The next thing that CM Punk discussed in the ComicBook interview was how he came up with his Basic Thuganomics rap taunt of John Cena a few weeks ago on SmackDown. ‘The Second City Saint’ said that he watched loads of Cena footage to get a hold on his promo delivery. Moreover, Punk was aided in this endeavor by his friend Jensen Karp, whom Punk described as a battle rap master.

So the legendary wrestler leaned on him and another one of their friends, Ron. Speaking of what the rationale was behind coming up with the parody of Doctor of Thuganomics, it was to catch the fans off guard, as they were expecting Pipebomb 2.0 from him. Cena had recently blasted his rival with his version of the Pipebomb, so the audience was convinced that Punk would retort in a similar fashion.

However, ‘The Voice of the Voiceless’ affirmed he’s never been high on delivering sequels to something that doesn’t need it. Punk quipped that he wouldn’t have topped himself even if he were to emulate his original Pipebomb promo from 2011. He further noted how the entire last week heading into his final showdown with ‘The Cenation Leader’ was pretty emotional to him.

What does CM Punk think of his upcoming bout with Gunther?

CM Punk will be tested against a formidable Gunther at this year’s SummerSlam. It’ll be for the World Heavyweight Championship, with the Chicago-born grappler gunning for an upset. But does winning actually matter for ‘The Straight Edge Superstar’ at this point in his career?

Punk told ComicBook that getting the opportunity to share the ring with ‘The Ring General’ means more to him. They’ve wrestled each other during a live event in Vienna but never shared the ring on the main roster. That’ll change come SummerSlam.

Both Punk and Gunther are announced for a faceoff on this week’s Raw in Houston, Texas. The former Imperium leader is fresh off retiring Goldberg at Saturday Night’s Main Event. It’d be interesting to see what he’ll have to say about his next opponent.
