Coco Gauff is sad to see Andy Murray not ending his career on his terms after his back injury forced him to pull out of the Wimbledon singles matches. After her second-round win over Anca Todoni 6-2, 6-1, Gauff talked about Murray and his mother Judy Murray‘s influence, especially their work for women’s tennis.
Though Murray has not announced his retirement, it’s safe to say that he is playing his last Wimbledon. And though he withdrew from singles, he will join his brother Jamie Murray for doubles and 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu for mixed doubles events.
Murray, who has two singles titles at Wimbledon he won in 2013 and 2016, once corrected a reporter at 2017 Wimbledon. The reporter said Murray’s quarterfinal opponent, Sam Querrey was the “first US player” to reach the semifinal of a Grand Slam since 2009. Murray interrupted him by saying, “Male player,” because several women players have reached the semifinals. Gauff watched the video and appreciated him.
I really appreciate him, not only him, but also his mother for everything they’ve done for equality in women’s sports. I think his legacy is that he’s just a fighter. The most inspiration I have for him is no matter what court he’s playing, whether it’s Centre Court here or an ITF, he puts 100% effort into that.Coco Gauff said at the press conference
Gauff will next face home favorite Sonay Kartal on July 5 and will aim to make it past the fourth round for the first time. She kicked off her campaign by beating compatriot Caroline Dolehide in the first round.
Coco Gauff wants Andy Murray to have a great run at Wimbledon
Andy Murray injured his back at the Queen’s Club Championships last month and the surgery made everyone believe that he would be able to play his last Wimbledon. While nursing the injury, Murray waited for the final moment to decide about his participation before withdrawing from it on Tuesday. Coco Gauff in that press conference lauded Murray for his career and wants him to have a great campaign in doubles.
It’s really unfortunate that he couldn’t get one last healthy match out here because he definitely deserves to end his career on terms. I hope the doubles go well with his brother. He’s an icon of the sport, and he’s had an incredible career that a lot of people dream of.Coco Gauff added
Murray and Jamie Murray will face American pair John Peers and Rinky Hijikata in the first round. In the mixed doubles, Murray and Emma Raducanu will meet Marcelo Arevalo and Zhang Shuai to kick-start their campaign.
