American tennis star Coco Gauff had a befitting reply to all the critics after her China Open title win. The former US Open champion has had a disastrous summer and autumn, which saw her relinquish the US Open title and go without any medals at the Paris Olympics.
However, a China Open title win with a brand new coaching staff was just what the doctor ordered. Despite her great achievement, she still had to put down some of her critics online for questioning her mentality.
Honestly kids have the best out look on life. they are so positive and creative. so I’ll take it my goal this tournament was to play and enjoy tennis as much as I did when I was a kid because that’s when life was/is the most fun!

In 2023, Gauff had a fantastic year, winning titles in Washington, and Cincinnati, and her first Grand Slam in New York. But 2024 had been quieter for her until the China Open victory.
After her fourth-round exit at the 2024 US Open, Gauff parted ways with coach Brad Gilbert. She then brought in Matt Daly, who worked with Denis Shapovalov and Jean-Christophe Faurel. Together, they helped her win their first tournament in Beijing. Now, Gauff heads into the Wuhan Open with renewed confidence.
Coco Gauff reveals her ‘nothing to lose’ mentality during the China Open final
Coco Gauff faced some challenges on her way to the China Open final. With a new coaching team, she was trying out different strategies. She treated the early rounds like practice matches. This might explain why she dropped the first set in the fourth round, quarterfinals, and semifinals. However, before the final, the former World No.2 had a relaxed state of mind.

I was just like, `This match is not going to change my life,’ I knew regardless of the result today, I was proud. Honestly, I was just telling myself the whole match I’m proud of myself, how I was able to overcome and still work on things that I’ve been practicing on, too, and stick to it.

Gauff’s competitive spirit kicked in during the final. She won all three of those matches in three sets. Her opponents were Naomi Osaka, qualifier Yuliia Starodubtseva, and Paula Badosa. In each of these matches, Gauff fought back after losing the opening set.
In the final, Gauff was unstoppable. She played much better and cut down on the errors from previous rounds. The American dominated Karolina Muchova, winning the match 6-1, 6-3. The 2023 US Open champion’s ability to finish strong was on full display in this match.
Her win in the China Open also set a new record. Gauff has now won all seven of her first hard-court finals on the Hologic WTA Tour. She is the first woman to achieve this in over 50 years of open-era play. She is 8-for-9 in finals overall.
