No. 3 seed Coco Gauff started her US Open title defense with a win on Monday. She defeated France’s Varvara Gracheva with a 6-2, 6-0 score at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The match took just 66 minutes as Gauff easily advanced to the next round.
After her victory, Gauff is already setting her sights on big goals for the tournament ahead. She is determined to keep pushing forward in her quest for another title.
Someone commented on my TikTok and was like, ‘You’ve won in life literally and figuratively. There’s no point in putting pressure on yourself during a victory lap.’ I’m just treating this tournament like this. If you defend something that means you won something. If you did it that means you can do it again. Whether I do it again this year or not.. I’m gonna do it again. Whether it’s 2024 or not, I will do it again.Coco Gauff said in her post-match interview at the US Open
This win extends Gauff’s streak at the US Open to eight matches. Last year, she won her first Grand Slam title here. She became the first American teenager to do so since Serena Williams in 1999.
Next, Gauff will face Germany’s Tatjana Maria in the second round. Maria, a Wimbledon semifinalist in 2022, beat Solana Sierra from Argentina in her first match. The defending champion won her only previous match earlier this year in Auckland.
Coco Gauff kicks off her US Open title defense in style
Defending US Open champion Coco Gauff left behind her rough summer as she began her title defense. She dominated Varvara Gracheva with a 6-2, 6-0 win. The American entered the tournament after losing three of her last four matches.
At 20 years old, Gauff now has 15 main-draw victories in her US Open career. She is the youngest woman to achieve this since Caroline Wozniacki in 2010. This year marks her sixth main draw appearance at the US Open. She first competed here as a 15-year-old wild card in 2019 and reached the third round.
In her opening match, Gauff faced six break points in her first three service games but saved all of them with strong serves. Meanwhile, she converted two of her own break points in the first set, quickly taking the lead despite some close games.
The second set saw Gauff take complete control, jumping to a 5-0 lead. Gracheva had two more chances to break, but the American shut them down with aces. She hit her 10th ace to set up a match point and finished with a perfect record of saving all eight break points she faced.
