Coco Gauff‘s journey at the US Open came to an unfortunate end in the fourth round as she lost 3-6, 6-4, 3-6 to local favorite Emma Navarro on Sunday (September 1). This was the first time Gauff was defending a singles Grand Slam title in her career.
The biggest talking point was her serve, which was problematic throughout the match. Gauff committed 19 double faults, including 12 in the final set.
These double faults made it difficult for her to close out service games, allowing Navarro to earn 12 break points and convert four of them. In contrast, Gauff had only five break points and converted two.
19 – With 19 double faults, Coco Gauff served the equal-most double faults for her career in a single WTA main draw match, serving as many against Martina Trevisan at Roland Garros in 2020. Ouch.#USOpen | @usopen @WTA @WTA_insider

Gauff’s other serving stats were equally concerning. The 20-year-old landed only 46% of her first serves and won just 61% of her points behind the second serve.
With win against the defending champion Coco Gauff, Emma Navarro has surpassed own expectations
When Emma Navarro played Coco Gauff a few months ago at Wimbledon, she was not yet widely recognized in the tennis world. However, the 23-year-old American made a name for herself by defeating the defending champion in three sets during their fourth round clash.
With the upset she has pulled on Sunday, Navarro has now advanced to her second consecutive major quarterfinal and ending Gauff’s title defense and 11-match winning streak in New York. With good reason, Navarro was content with her level of tennis.
When I first left college, my coach and I kind of made like a two-year contract that I would fully commit myself to playing professional tennis for two years and then kind of just reassess after that. I think I hit the two-year mark this June, and we didn't even acknowledge it or talk about it. So, yeah, definitely have surpassed my expectations for sure.Emma Navarro said after the win (H/T: WTA Tennis)
Gauff struggled throughout the match, making 60 unforced errors and 19 double faults. However, she remained competitive until the final game. The match was intense, with both players hitting powerful groundstrokes mainly to the center of the court. Despite Gauff’s efforts, she kept producing bad service games at the wrong time, which eventually made things easier for her opponent.
In case you missed it!
