Following Team Poland’s 3-0 win over Kazakhstan, Iga Swiatek set up a blockbuster United Cup final clash with rival Coco Gauff of Team USA. The match, however, did not end in Swiatek’s favor as she lost it with a scoreline of 6-4, 6-4.
The United Cup match was their first meeting since the 2024 WTA Finals where Gauff, the eventual winner, defeated the Pole in straights in the group stage. After her latest win, the 20-year-old is now 3-12 in her head-to-head meeting against the former World No.1.
I have the belief that I’m one of the best players in the world and when I play good tennis I’m hard to beat. Today I think I played some great tennis. I’m glad I was able to get a point for Team USA. It was tough today, I’m not gonna lie.
Coco Gauff said after the match
Gauff made her debut at the United Cup this year and won all her matches undefeated. Before beating Swiatek, she went past Leylah Fernandez, Donna Vekic, Zhang Shuai, and Karolina Muchova.

I realized the worst thing that can happen today is I lose. In this type of format, even if I lose we still have a chance to win. I just said ‘I’m gonna give my best effort’ and I think that’s all the team can ask of me.

Before this match, Swiatek won all the singles matches in the United Cup. In the semifinal tie against Kazakhstan, the 23-year-old beat Elena Rybakina in singles, while Gauff breezed past Karolina Muchova.
Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz, who will face Taylor Fritz now has the huge task of leveling the scores. Hurkacz has lost three matches he played against Fritz and was defeated in their last two encounters. Following the men’s singles, the four players (Gauff, Fritz, Swiatek, Hurkacz) will again walk onto the court for the mixed doubles.
Team USA were crowned as champions in the inaugural edition of the United Cup in 2023. In the semifinals this year, they secured a 3-0 victory over Czech Republic. On the other hand, Poland, last year, advanced to the summit clash and were defeated by Germany.
