Coco Gauff hasn’t looked in her best shape since January after reaching the Australian Open semifinals. However, she looks to be getting back in form after she produced a masterclass performance in the second round of the Mutua Madrid Open.
The American youngster was in haste to beat her opponent, 33-year-old Dutch Arantxa Rus, to prepare for her next match. She needed just 52 minutes to beat the Dutch legend without losing a point. The victory was Gauff’s first Hologic WTA tour-level win without losing a game.
The American has been struggling this season and has not reached the semifinals since Melbourne. In her first tournament, she reached the quarterfinals of the Stuttgart Open before losing to Marketa Vondrousova. But, it seems Madrid looks different for her.
Against Rus today, the American left only 18 points for her opponent to pick while winning three of her 12 games. She also becomes the third player after Victoria Azarenka and Simona Halep to win a match 6-0, 6-0 in the Mutua Madrid Open. In addition, she’s also the third player in the WTA this season to win a tour-level match with double bagel since Aryna Sabalenka recorded the same against Lesia Tsurenko in Melbourne.
Meanwhile, the performance of Rus was shocking, as she kept missing all her rallies. The Dutch has reached three quarterfinals this season and in her first match in Madrid, she had defeated Czech star Brenda Fruhvirtova.

Following Coco Gauff‘s extraordinary victory against Arantxa Rus, fans on X (formerly known as Twitter) reacted by stating that the American won the match to go watch Rafael Nadal play 16-year-old Darwin Blanch which made the Madrid main draw headlines recently. Alongside the usual fun banter, netizens also took some potshots at Arantxa Rus’ lack of fight.
Check out how others reacted to Gauff’s double bagel win at the Madrid Open:
Gauff will face Ukraine youngster Dayana Yastremska in the third round of the Madrid tournament. Yastremska, despite injury struggle since January, came from behind to defeat Emiliana Arango 0-6, 7-5, 6-4. Gauff will be hoping to get past her last year’s third-round exit where she lost to Paula Badosa 6-4, 6-0.
On the other hand, this is the second tournament and third match Nadal will play since his comeback at the Barcelona Open. The five-time Madrid Open winner is hoping to spring surprises despite a lengthy injury spell this year.
