Coco Gauff has doubled her Grand Slam singles titles tally by winning the French Open on Saturday (June 7). In a final between the World No.1 and World No.2, Gauff came from a set down to defeat Aryna Sabalenka 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-4 to take home her career’s first French Open title.
It was her second singles Major title after her triumph in the 2023 US Open final against the same opponent. Last year, she and Katerina Siniakova beat Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani to become French Open doubles champion.
The 21-year-old has now become the youngest American to clinch the French Open singles title after Serena Williams in 2002. After her victory, Gauff took to TikTok and joked why it’s not the right thing to go out after winning a tournament.
Going out after winning a sporting event should be illegal. You’re emotional, dehydrated, starving, and then they put champagne in my hand. Of course I’m going out bad…. I had fun tho we upppppppp.
It was Gauff’s second appearance in the French Open following the 2022 season- played her first Grand Slam final- which she lost to Iga Swiatek, who is a four-time champion in the clay-court Major but was eliminated by Sabalenka in the semifinal.
Gauff is the first woman to win a French Open final after dropping the first set against a World No.1 since Steffi Graf in 1999. She is also the youngest woman to lift a Grand Slam title on multiple surfaces since Maria Sharapova (Wimbledon 2004 and US Open 2006).
Coco Gauff on what she did right after winning the French Open
Coco Gauff thought she would hit a crashing point after what she did right after becoming a two-time Grand Slam singles champion. She told WTA that although she didn’t have much time to reflect on her win, she had a crazy time while celebrating her victory.

I finished press around 9 p.m., then went back to the hotel, and changed in like 15 minutes. Then we went out. I had lamb chops and fish and fries, mostly finger foods. I’m still hungry from last night. We were high on energy, so I didn’t eat as much as I thought I would. I went to bed around three and woke up around eight.
Gauff is now one of the seven active players to win multiple Grand Slam titles. Before the French Open, she made it to the finals of the Madrid Open and the Italian Open, losing both to Aryna Sabalenka and Jasmine Paolini, respectively. It was also her first title of the season (before this, she won the 2024 WTA Finals) and her second singles trophy on clay following the 2021 Emilia-Romagna Open.
The Belarusian played her seventh final of the season in Paris and has so far won three titles: Brisbane International, Miami Open, and Madrid Open. For Gauff, it was her third final. Before this French Open, Sabalenka never progressed to the final of this event. She was defeated by Mirra Andreeva in the quarterfinal last year and by Karolina Muchova in the semifinals in 2023.
Gauff has now 8,083 points in the rankings. The three-time Grand Slam singles champion will continue to sit on top with 11,553 points.
Next is Wimbledon and Gauff has never made it past the fourth round. She reached the last 16 in 2019, 2021, and 2024. She hasn’t yet lifted a title on the surface. Sabalenka too has never won a grass-court title. The 27-year-old was the finalist in 2021 and 2023. She had skipped the tournament last season due to an injury.
