American youngster Coco Gauff has emerged as a leader among the young generation of WTA players since her victory at the 2023 US Open. She’s not only excelling on the court but also championing black hairstyles, challenging traditional beauty standards.

Gauff has always maintained her box braids, twists, or natural hair that matches her kits on the court this season. In her first tournament this year, she defeated Elina Svitolina to win the Auckland Open. She then reached the semifinals of the Australian Open before losing to the eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka.

In an interview with Popsugar, she maintained that she has embraced her natural and looks to showcase her black hairstyles when she’s on the court. The youngster, who turned 20 in March, revealed that she is using an American beauty brand product ‘Carol’s Daughter’ to showcase her self-expression.

As I've matured, I've started learning to embrace my hair more. When I play, I like to wear protective hairstyles because I need low-manipulation looks. When I was young, I committed myself to showcasing Black hairstyles when I play, and that's something that I take pride in. Whether it's box braids, twists, or my natural hair, it's a form of self-expression that I'm really proud of, especially because you still don't see it very often in our sport.

At the Sunshine doubles, she exited the Indian Wells Masters in the semifinals and the round of 16 at the Miami Open. She has yet to reach any final since January after winning the Auckland Open. But with the addition of coach Jean-Christophe Faurel to her team, a change of fortune seems imminent.

Gauff will play Marta Kostyuk in the quarterfinals of the Stuttgart Open as she seeks her second title of the season. The American has already gone one step ahead of her last year’s exit in Stuttgart, losing to Anastasia Potapova in the round of 16.
