World No. 2 Coco Gauff clinched her second Grand Slam title at the Roland Garros 2025. In both the Grand Slam triumphs, she defeated Aryna Sabalenka, coming back from a set down, with her maiden triumph being at the 2023 US Open.
Gauff fell on the court and burst into tears as she sealed the victory in an intense three-set battle against World No. 1 Sabalenka at Court Philippe-Chartier. The 21-year-old later got up on her knees to gesture a heart symbol with her hands and then went to hug her parents and her team.
It was an extremely emotional moment for the young American, who, after two unsuccessful consecutive finals at the Madrid Open and Italian Open, finally won a title at the Roland Garros.
Sabalenka started the first set of the Roland Garros finals strong, taking a 4-1 lead. With an excellent return and drop shot, trailing at 4-1, Gauff broke Sabalenka for the first time. At 4-3, Gauff hit an eye-popping backhand lob that left the World No. 1 awestruck. She shortly leveled the score to 4-4. Both played fiercely, and at 6-5, Gauff with another incredible backhand shot, soon broke Sabalenka to take the set to tiebreak.

Although Gauff started the tiebreak strong, taking a 3-0 lead while Sabalenka made quite a few errors, the Belarusian soon regained her form and employed some drop shots to eventually clinch the tiebreak. Gauff dominated the second set, starting strong with a 2-0 lead, and conceding only two games to Sabalenka. At 5-2, Gauff hit an incredible ace to win the second set.
The third set was quite competitive, like the first set. During 1-1 of the decider, Sabalenka hit a compelling tweener shot, to which Gauff smashed an incredible winner. Although Sabalenka saved a match point trailing at 3-5, an error at 4-5 from her gave away the victory to the 21-year-old, who clinched her first title of the season, winning the finals with a scoreline of 6-7, 6-2, 6-3.
Coco Gauff wins the Roland Garros final at her second attempt after losing to Iga Swiatek in 2022
The World No. 1 and No. 2 faced each other in a women’s singles Grand Slam final for the first time since the Australian Open 2018 (Simona Halep and Caroline Wozniacki) and for the first time at Roland Garros since 2013 (Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova. Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff had also met in another clay court final this season at the Madrid Open, where the Belarusian triumphed.

This encounter at Roland Garros was Gauff’s second final at the tournament. She reached her maiden Roland Garros final in 2022, where she lost to Iga Swiatek in straight sets. It marked three-time Grand Slam champion Sabalenka’s first Grand Slam final outside of her beloved hard court.
It was a rather heartbreaking moment for Sabalenka, who lost her second Grand Slam final of the season. She was denied an elusive three-peat at the Australian Open earlier this year by another American player, Madison Keys. With this victory, Gauff improved her head-to-head record over Sabalenka to 6-5.
Gauff stood out throughout this fierce match with her extremely impressive court coverage, variety of shots including her incredible backhand shots, lobs, slices, and drop shots, and, most importantly, with her composed mentality. Sabalenka, albeit displaying some great shots too, lost her cool at some points throughout the match and looked visibly frustrated.
