Dominic Thiem is playing his last tournament on the ATP tour in Vienna. The 2020 US Open champion will retire after that, and with the stage set for his goodbye, the 31-year-old looked back on his career and his quest for a Grand Slam title.
Thiem admitted that he gave too much importance to winning a major title but later realized it was just an illusion. When asked if anything changed after he finally won a Grand Slam, the Austrian said that while he thought that holding that title in his hand would make him happy forever, it did not happen. Thiem recalled how things went back to normal after a couple of months.
Thiem admitted that while it is a big deal to win a Grand Slam title, in the end, “it’s only a trophy” and it “shouldn’t make a big difference” in life. Notably, the 31-year-old has lost three Grand Slam finals (2017 and 2018 Roland Garros, 2020 Australian Open) before finally lifting his first Major title in New York in 2020.
Coco Gauff agrees with Dominic Thiem’s views on Grand Slams
WTA star Coco Gauff has agreed with Dominic Thiem‘s views about Grand Slam titles not giving a lifetime of happiness. The 20-year-old, who won her maiden Grand Slam title at the 2023 US Open, shared Thiem’s comments on social media and backed his remarks.
The American ace became one of the youngest US Open champions as she beat Aryna Sabalenka in the final last year. Gauff became a sensation overnight and gained a lot of traction with her heroic effort in New York. However, she attracted criticism after she could not make it to any Grand Slam final and failed to win a title (WTA 500 or 1000) until the China Open this year.
