Right before playing her opening match at the Cincinnati Open, Coco Gauff talked about how the Olympics played a role in keeping her country united amidst ‘political turmoil’ in the United States. Gauff made her debut at the Paris Olympics but had a disappointing campaign in both singles and doubles.
The World No. 2, however, was the flag-bearer along with basketball legend LeBron James for the US. Though she got knocked out early from the tournament, she felt there was some peace in her country as people put aside their political differences to cheer for the athletes.
I know there’s a lot of political turmoil going on in the country. I hope that it stays as peaceful and respectful as possible, regardless of who you want to win. It is nice that the Olympic year is always an election year because I feel like we all need some peace during election time. One thing, as Americans, is that we will put all our differences aside to root for athletes.Coco Gauff said at the press conference
Because of the US presidential election, which gets underway on November 5, 2024, the people are mostly divided due to their different political opinions. Kamala Harris of the Democratic Party will be up against former US President Donald Trump of the Republican Party.
Coco Gauff once urged young Americans to vote during elections
Coco Gauff has always been outspoken about the things that mattered to her. In May this year, Gauff, who is from Florida, expressed her frustrations over the controversy around banning books in her state after Republican Governor Ron DeSantis signed the bill. Gauff urged the American youth to exercise their right to vote instead of just complaining about the political climate.
I feel like sometimes, in my generation, people think their vote doesn’t count. We should all just use our voices and use the power that we have.Coco Gauff told the Associated Press
And about her run at the Cincinnati Open, Gauff, who was the second seed and the defending champion, lost in the second round to Yulia Putintseva in three sets. Prior to Cincinnati, the 20-year-old was eliminated at the Canadian Open after her fourth-round match against Diana Shnaider. The reigning US Open champion has won just one title this season, which she lifted in January at the ASB Classic.
