Coco Gauff had an ‘okurrr’ reaction when he realized she pocketed $4,805,000 after her three-hour and four-minute win over Qinwen Zheng at the WTA Finals. Gauff made a stunning comeback from 3-6, 1-3 to defeat the Chinese 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(7-2) on Saturday (November 9) in Riyadh’s King Saud University Indoor Arena.

This edition of the WTA Finals offered a record $15.25 million in prize money. Had Gauff won the tournament undefeated, she would have bagged $5.15 million. She suffered a loss in her final group-stage match against Barbora Krejcikova.

During the press conference, Gauff said she did not play for the prize money and had no idea how much the tournament offered to the winner. The prize money, which was also the biggest in the history of the tour meant a lot for Gauff but she was clueless when asked about how she would treat herself.

I don’t know what I’ll do with it, that’s a lot of money. What you said? 4.8? I hope I’m one of the highest-paid female tennis players this year, or athletes, so that would be exciting.

Coco Gauff says she will not be focusing on World No. 1 ranking next year

The main goal of Coco Gauff is to win Grand Slam titles but rankings are not at the back of her mind. Gauff has won one Grand Slam title, in the 2023 US Open and achieved her career-high rankings in June this season when she became a World No. 2.

Yes and no. I’ve never been a ranking-focused person, I just want Slams. Both obviously yeah, I know I have that possibility. But honestly, it’s not on my mind, I just want to rack up the Slam trophies.

The WTA Finals was Gauff’s third title of the season after her win at the ASB Classic and China Open. En route to victory, the American also went past Iga Swiatek in the group stage and Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals.

The win made her the first American since Serena Williams in 2014 to win the title, and the fourth American to win it before turning 21. Gauff has also clinched the year-end No. 3 for the second time on the trot.
