Coco Gauff has continued with her 2024 end-of-season form at the Australian Open. The American earned her 10th consecutive win and 8th in 2025 after beating Leylah Fernandez in straight sets. The 20-year-old has now booked a place in the fourth round of the competition and has revealed the reason behind her advancement in Melbourne.

Ahead of the Australian Open, Gauff played a vital role in helping the team. The USA won the United Cup for the first time in two years. The World No.3’s significant improvement in her game was well noticeable at the 2024 WTA Finals, where she defeated Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka en route to winning the title.

She showcased another high-class performance against 30th seed Fernandez. The American was quick to shrug off her opponent as the Canadian star was slow to build on every point she won. Gauff was able to outmaneuver the 2021 US Open finalist by winning 6-4, 6-2 in the third round at the Rod Laver Arena.

During her on-court interview, Gauff was asked how she’s able to stay grounded after every match win at the Australian Open. She revealed that it was because of the community she has built around herself since her childhood.

My community… volunteering. I grew up in the church. When you grow up in a community like that, you have no choice but to stay grounded.

Gauff is yet to drop a set at the Australian Open and has been playing her best tennis. She’s among the favorites to win the title for the first time in her career. If she does eventually win the trophy, it will take her tally to two Grand Slams at just 20 years old.

Coco Gauff has won eight matches this year, five of which came at the United Cup. The consecutive victories put her in the good company of Margaret Court, Steffi Graf, and Serena Williams, who have already achieved the feat. However, Gauff believes that her victory against Leylah Fernandez wasn’t as easy as many witnessed.

The American star said that the Canadian star played different tactics to the previous one when she met her at the United Cup. She then praised the 22-year-old as a great competitor.

I think it was harder because she knew what to expect, and I definitely think she played a little bit different today than at the United Cup,. Leylah is a great competitor, great player, great person so I knew today was going to be a tough match regardless of the result a couple of weeks ago.
