Coco Gauff unintentionally caused a light-hearted moment at the French Open when she entered Court Philippe-Chatrier without her rackets. She appeared briefly puzzled before a ball boy rushed in with her mint-colored racket bag.
The stadium announcer joked, “That’s better,” prompting laughter and applause from the crowd. Gauff quickly recovered from the mishap and defeated Olivia Gadecki 6-2, 6-2 in her first-round match. Gauff said in her Roland Garros post-match interview:
I go on the court and realize I have no racquets. I literally just made fun of Frances for it in Madrid. Now I’ll be quiet.
After the win, Gauff playfully placed the blame on her coach for the forgotten equipment. Despite the distraction, the second seed stayed focused and delivered a strong performance on court.

Interestingly, she wasn’t the only American to forget rackets this season. Frances Tiafoe did the same earlier this year in Indian Wells but also went on to win, just like Gauff. These two Americans are headlining the men’s and women’s draws alongside Tommy Paul and Jessica Pegula. Taylor Fritz has already crashed out in the first round.
Coco Gauff improves opening record at Roland Garros
American tennis star Coco Gauff began her 2025 French Open campaign with a convincing win on Court Philippe-Chatrier. The World No. 2 defeated Australia’s Olivia Gadecki 6-2, 6-2 in just over an hour to move into the second round.

This marked Gauff’s sixth consecutive first-round victory at Roland Garros. She dominated the match from the start, winning the first three games of both sets. A funny moment came before the match when she entered the court without her racquets.
Paris remains the only Grand Slam where Gauff has never lost her opening match. Across her six first-round matches in the tournament, she has dropped just one set. Next, Gauff will take on Czech qualifier Tereza Valentova. Valentova made a comeback win over Chloe Paquet, recovering from a 5-2 deficit in the third set to win 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
The American star is looking to build on the momentum she created after reaching back-to-back finals at the Madrid Open and the Italian Open. Gauff lost to Aryna Sabalenka and Jasmine Paolini in those finals, respectively.
Coco Gauff’s statistics in the opening round win
2023 US Open champion Coco Gauff has built a flawless first-round record at Roland Garros. With her recent victory, she improved to 6-0 in opening matches at the tournament and has only dropped one set in those encounters.

Against Olivia Gadecki, Gauff broke serve six times out of eight opportunities. Her dominance on return was evident, as she won 62% of points on Gadecki’s serve, surpassing her own service point percentage of 60%.
One area where Gauff struggled slightly was her serve. She hit seven double faults, just one more than Gadecki’s six, marking the only key stat not in her favor. This is one issue that has remained even under her previous coach, Brad Gilbert.
Gadecki, ranked No. 91 and making her main-draw debut at the French Open, committed 32 unforced errors during the match, which helped Gauff control the momentum throughout.
