Defending US Open champion Coco Gauff has expressed heartfelt support for Caroline Garcia after the French player called out online harassment in her latest X post. The unseeded player shared a few screenshots and comments showing online abuse directed towards her.
This development came following Garcia’s opening-round loss in singles at the US Open. Many current players, including World No. 1 Iga Swiatek, have shown their support for her.
Garcia is not the only player subjected to online harassment, as Gauff and Swiatek have experienced similar issues themselves. However, both tennis stars have shared advice on how they cope with it.
It is tough, and you could be having a good day, and then somebody will literally tell you, ‘Oh, go kill yourself.’ You're, like, Okay, thanks. I really hope that players just continue to not look at it and especially Caroline. She's a super nice girl. It sucks, but I hope people -- I mean, I always say people can be more mindful and be kinder, but you know, millions of people have said that, and only a few listen. Hopefully the Al stuff can help in the future.Coco Gauff said in her post-match press conference
Despite the online abuse, Garcia hopes to improve her performance, as her US Open journey isn’t over yet. She is competing with Danielle Collins in the women’s doubles draw.
Coco Gauff moves into the US Open third round despite poor serving performance
After struggling with her serve during a U.S. Open match, Coco Gauff went to a practice court Wednesday night (August 28) to work on it. She noticed that her tosses were off, so even though she defeated 99th-ranked Tatjana Maria 6-4, 6-0, and advanced to the third round, the 20-year-old wanted to correct the problem.
Gauff had a tough start against Maria at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Maria, a 37-year-old from Germany, played a tricky game, using slices on almost every shot. The third seed had issues with her serve, hitting seven double-faults in the first set, and struggled in other areas too, like winning only 9 out of 17 points at the net and making 20 unforced errors compared to just 10 winners.
When serving for the first set, Gauff double-faulted twice and nearly lost her lead. However, she managed to save two break points, winning the set with a cross-court forehand. Despite the challenges, she pulled through to finish the match strongly.
Gauff will face 27th-seeded Elina Svitolina on Friday for a spot in the fourth round. Svitolina, a three-time major semifinalist, won her match 6-1, 6-2 against Anhelina Kalinina. Gauff entered the U.S. Open after some disappointing losses in recent tournaments, including early exits at Wimbledon and the Paris Olympics.
