Coco Gauff‘s match against Belinda Bencic was one of the three matches held on Monday (April 28) and the rest of the 22 were scheduled for Tuesday. This was due to the massive power outage across Spain and Portugal.
Gauff, after her 6-4, 6-2 victory over the 2021 Olympic gold medalist, was talking about her sleep and what she had for breakfast that day when the mic stopped working suddenly due to the power failure. That was the exact moment when the power went out and Gauff later took to X to react to the moment.
Put this in the history books, in all seriousness I hope everyone stays safe.

Gauff couldn’t shower after her match. There was no running water and she had to wipe herself with the baby wipes. The 21-year-old also had to walk to her hotel since the traffic light also stopped working.
The power went out after 12 p.m. local time and came back on around 9 p.m. local time in some parts of the country, including in Madrid, the capital city. Some parts of France too faced blackout. The reason behind this unusual incident is not known yet. According to Portuguese energy sector company Redes Energeticas Nacionais (REN), the blackout perhaps was caused by a rare phenomenon known as ‘induced atmospheric vibration’.
Coco Gauff reveals the impact of power cut at the Madrid Open
Coco Gauff is scheduled to lock horns with Mirra Andreeva in the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open. After completing her Madrid Open fourth-round match, Gauff revealed how the atmosphere was at the Caja Magica when the power was out.

Most of the time we’re trying to prepare for our matches, everyone’s zoned in and we all understand that. I was talking to Frances [Tiafoe], talking to Mirra, too, Diana [Shnaider], Maddy [Keys]. This is the type of situation, it’s light-hearted, nobody knows when they’re going to go on.
Coco Gauff told reporters
Gauff is 2-0 against Andreeva in the head-to-head encounter, beating her in the 2023 Roland Garros and the US Open of the same year. Before setting up the clash with Gauff, Andreeva knocked out Yuliia Starodubtseva 6-1, 6-4 before the outage on Monday.
Andreeva has become the first WTA player to win 10 matches at a WTA 1000 tournament before turning 18. The 18-year-old had progressed to the Madrid Open quarterfinals last year and in 2023, she reached the fourth round.
Coco Gauff becomes the second woman to accomplish a feat at the Madrid Open
Coco Gauff, after taking a 3-2 head-to-head lead over Belinda Bencic, advanced to the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open for the first time in her fifth appearance in the tournament. Gauff has now become a quarterfinalist in nine of the 10 WTA 1000 tournaments.

This made her the only second player to progress to the last eight of the WTA 1000 tournament in the Spanish capital after registering a 0-6 defeat in the first set of the Madrid Open. In her opening round match, Gauff dropped the first set before making a strong comeback to knock out Dayana Yastremska with a 0-6, 6-2, 7-5 win.
Before the youngster, Bethanie Mattek-Sands achieved this after Ana Ivanovic registered a bagel against her in the 2011 Madrid Open first round. Gauff is bidding to win her first title of the season and her first overall since the 2024 WTA Finals. Since her defeat to Paula Badosa in the Australian Open semifinal this year, Gauff lost five tournaments without winning more than two matches, before finally breaking the streak in Madrid.
