Coco Gauff advanced to the fourth round of the US Open with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 comeback win over 27th seed Elina Svitolina. The American is the defending champion of the event.
As a result of this comeback win, Gauff has extended her US Open winning streak to 10 matches. She is the youngest to reach this milestone since Serena Williams did so in 1999 and 2000.
Gauff entered the US Open with high expectations. She was the flag bearer for the United States at the Paris Olympics but was unable to secure any medals for her country.
After disappointing early exits at the Canadian Masters and the Cincinnati Open, she is back at the US Open. Friday’s (August 30) win has ensured that the American has reached the fourth round of the US Open for the third time in her career. She was also a quarterfinalist in the 2022 edition.
Coco Gauff continues her US Open title defense
The defending US Open champion, Coco Gauff, continued her title defense with a hard-fought 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Elina Svitolina. This win marked the American’s 10th consecutive triumph in New York. Svitolina posed a significant challenge, testing Gauff throughout the match.
Gauff managed to save five out of seven break points despite hitting 21 winners and 35 unforced errors. Her resilience was key in overcoming the errors. In the next round, the third seed will face either No.13 Emma Navarro or No.19 Marta Kostyuk in a fourth-round match on Sunday.
Svitolina aimed to reach the fourth round of all four Grand Slam tournaments in a single season for the first time. She put early pressure on Gauff’s serve but couldn’t capitalize on her initial breakpoints. After the third seed created three break opportunities, the Ukrainian defended them all, winning the last three points of the game.
The momentum shifted in the second set when Gauff broke Svitolina in the sixth game, gaining control. In the final set, the American broke the 27th seed twice, including a highlight 37-stroke rally. Gauff eventually converted her fourth match point to secure the win.
