Coco Gauff has secured a berth in the Australian Open quarterfinals after she came from a set down to beat Belinda Bencic 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 on Sunday (January 19). The win came just an hour after TikTok was removed from Apple’s iOS App Store and Google’s Play Store in the United States.

Gauff, who has around 755,000 followers on TikTok, is very active on the social media platform and often participates in viral trends. Following the win over Bencic in two hours and 26 minutes, the American ace drew a broken heart and wrote ‘RIP TikTok USA’ on the television camera lens.

The Chinese-owned app stopped working late at night on Saturday in the US just before a federal ban. The law, which was passed last year in April, stated that the parent company ByteDance either sell TikTok to a non-Chinese owner or face a ban.

As it was not possible for the company to follow the first option, they decided to face a complete shutdown in the country.

Last year as well Gauff had a 9-0 record at the start of the season, and this made her the first woman to have a 9-0 record for the second time in a row since Victoria Azarenka, who achieved the feat in 2012-13.

I saw something on Instagram about that, but it’s pretty crazy to be amongst the same stat line as legends. I’m very grateful, and we worked hard in the off-season. Obviously, there’s still a lot to go for me to accomplish my goals, but I can say that I’m proud of myself and happy with how I performed.

Gauff will next lock horns with Paula Badosa in the quarterfinals. The Spaniard fended off Olga Danilovic to advance to the last eight stage of the Australian Open for the first time.

Gauff has met the former World No. 2 six times and has won three of those matches. In their last meeting, Gauff tied the head-to-head record by clinching a three-set win over Badosa in the semifinal of the 2024 China Open, which she later won.

Gauff produced her best performance at Melbourne Park when she reached the semifinal last year. She lost the match to current World No.1 and two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka.
