Coco Gauff, undoubtedly, is one of the most hardworking athletes on the tour. But because she is pretty active on social media, particularly TikTok, many end up thinking she gets distracted from tennis when she struggles to perform.

Gauff has made it clear that this certainly is not the case. In an interview with Showcase Tennis, the American said fans only see brief social media clips and assume she isn’t working hard.

There is no correlation. A typical training day for me is about 5 hours, and that doesn’t include warm-up and recovery. Meanwhile, filming a TikTok takes about 30 seconds. People see the 30 seconds and assume players don’t train.

Her mom, Candi Gauff, couldn’t agree more. She perhaps knows better than anyone how hardworking her daughter is. In the comment section of Showcase Tennis, she dropped this message:

I’m a witness! She works hard. Her one day is my two weeks. Haha.

World No.2 Aryna Sabalenka doesn’t “give a single heck” about what people think of her social media activity because, like Gauff, she loves posting on TikTok. She said most of her time is spent training and that she spends about “30 minutes a day” on these platforms.

Both Gauff and Sabalenka are in Beijing for the penultimate WTA 1000 of the season, the China Open. Sabalenka is a three-time quarterfinalist here, while Gauff is a former champion, winning in 2024 by defeating this year’s Wimbledon runner-up Karolina Muchova.

The second seed will lock horns with Renata Zarazua to kick off her campaign. Gauff, on the other hand, will face Camila Osorio in her opening-round match. Both players last met at the US Open. Gauff’s campaign ended with a three-set defeat to Elena Rybakina in the semifinals. The Kazakh ace later upset Sabalenka in the final, also ruining her three-peat goal.

Rennae Stubbs believes Coco Gauff should have ended her 2025 season after her US Open exit

Following her successful run at the 2025 French Open, Coco Gauff suffered a shock opening-round exit at Wimbledon. Then, prior to the US Open, she hired biomechanics expert Gavin MacMillan, who helped Aryna Sabalenka fix her serve.

Her campaign in the New York Slam ended in the fourth round with a straight-set defeat to four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka. Rennae Stubbs believes the 22-year-old should have ended her season after her US Open exit to work on her serve with MacMillan.

That’s why I suggested last year that Coco take the whole fall off and work on her serve. I think it’s been such a long period to make it into a shot that is a little bit more reliable, which it was this year. But I am sure Gavin MacMillan would have loved to have taken the entire fall to work on her forehand as well.

Rennae Stubbs said on her The Rennae Stubbs Tennis Podcast

In Beijing, Gauff is chasing her second title of the season. At the Cincinnati Open, she ended her title drought by beating countrywoman Jessica Pegula.

The forehand is still the issue. She went and won Wuhan last year, but I still think it would have been better to take those two-three months off. Serena used to take the fall off all the time and then come back for the Australian Open and usually win the tournament.

Rennae Stubbs added

Gauff has won four WTA 1000 singles titles so far. Last year at the China Open, her campaign ended in the semifinals. Amanda Anisimova is the reigning champion, but she withdrew due to a wrist injury.
