American WTA star Coco Gauff scripted history when she defeated Karolina Muchova in the China Open final. She beat Muchova 6-1, 6-3 on Sunday (October 6) to become the youngest China Open champion in 14 years. Gauff is also only the second American champion in Beijing, following Serena Williams‘ title runs in 2004 and 2013.

This incredible feat multiplied the happiness for Gauff, who said that she was honored to be mentioned in the same sentence as the 23-time singles Grand Slam champion. The 20-year-old said that she did not know that she would become only the second American woman to win the WTA 1000 tournament.

Especially honestly it means a lot when I saw that the last American woman to win this was Serena Williams. Honestly, anytime my name is mentioned in whatever sentence hers is, it’s like a huge honor to do something no one has ever done before. It is pretty cool. I didn’t know that was on the line.

With her win in Beijing, Gauff captured her second Masters title. She won her maiden WTA 1000 title in Cincinnati last year, where she also beat Muchova in the final. She is the second-youngest player to win her first two WTA 1000 finals after Bianca Andreescu (2019 Indian Wells, Toronto).

Coco Gauff says she would be happy if someone breaks her record

Coco Gauff became the first woman in the Open Era to win her first seven WTA hard court finals. The 2021 US Open champion started this season by successfully defending her title in Auckland. She made a few more finals and also reached the semifinals of the Australian Open and Roland Garros, as well as the fourth round at the US Open.

But winning the China Open title brought her a lot of happiness. Gauff now owns the record of being the first woman in the Open Era to win her first seven hard court finals. Later, she said she would be happy if someone broke that record in the future.

That’s pretty cool. I hope somebody else breaks it. I think records are meant to be broken, honestly.

Coco Gauff said.

Gauff’s title run in Beijing has massively improved her chances of qualifying for the WTA Finals for the third consecutive year. The American entered the week at No. 6 in the Race to the WTA Finals. With the title win, she will overtake US Open runner-up Jessica Pegula and Jasmine Paolini to sit at No. 4 heading into the Wuhan Open, the final WTA 1000 of the season.
