Coco Gauff recently shared her experience of becoming the flag-bearer for the USA at the 2024 Paris Olympics. It was a monumental moment for the American youngster to have become one of the youngest tennis players to hold the American flag at the Games.
Playing in singles and both the doubles tournaments, Gauff also had the responsibility of bearing the flag alongside another legend, LeBron James.
Her close friend Chris Eubanks had surprised her with the news of her getting selected as the flagbearer while they were doing a photo shoot. In a recent interview, Gauff reflected on that moment and said that she was honored to have been selected to lead the team.
Being in the Olympics in general and representing my country was a great experience, and being the flag bearer was really cool. I didn’t expect to be honored at all. Being there with LeBron was really cool.Coco Gauff told press in Cincinnati
Unfortunately, she did not get a dream debut at the Olympics. Gauff lost in the third round of the singles to Donna Vekic, lost in the second round in the women’s doubles, and reached the quarterfinals alongside Taylor Fritz before in the mixed doubles.
Coco Gauff suffers early exit on tour return as she gears up for Cincinnati Masters
After a forgetful Olympics, Coco Gauff returned on tour at the Canadian Open. She had entered with zero expectations of doing well because of the change in surfaces and, as predicted, she lost in the second round to Diana Shnaider.
After the loss, Gauff stated that she was feeling tired heading into the match and shouldn’t have played in the Masters event. Despite this, the American had high praise for Shnaider and admitted that the Russian played well to win 6-4, 6-1.
A tough return for Gauff, who is yet to find a good run of form this year. With no big wins yet, the American will be hoping to gather some momentum heading into the US Open, where she is the defending champion. She will next be in action at the Cincinnati Masters, with her first match scheduled for August 14.
