Coco Gauff finished Emily Bronte‘s magnum opus, Wuthering Heights, to enjoy the forthcoming film adaptation starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi. The Victorian drama is scheduled for release in theaters on February 13. Gauff read the novel during the Australian Open and finished it before returning to competition at the Qatar Open.
The 21-year-old, who is exploring classic English literature, did not find the gothic masterpiece to be about the greatest love story, thanks to its dark theme and its complex romantic hero (or villain), Heathcliff. In an Instagram post, Gauff also shared quite a few pictures, including of the novel, writing, “frolicking in gardens + other pretty things” in the caption.
I’m really curious how they’re going to do the movie, because I saw that they’re marketing it as the greatest love story, and after reading it, it’s not a great love story. So I don’t really know if this is about to be like, I feel like it’s just going to be the director’s take on the movie, based off the marketing. We’ll see. It was a good book, but it definitely is not the greatest love story. It’s a lot of toxicity and abuse going on in that book.

Gauff will be kick-starting her campaign against Elisabetta Cocciaretto. The American, fourth seed in the tournament, has never reached the singles final in Doha but has won doubles twice, with Jessica Pegula. They beat Veronika Kudermetova and Elise Mertens in 2022 and defended their title the following year against Lyudmyla Kichenok and Jelena Ostapenko.
I’ve never read a book in the 1800s before, so I had to reread a couple of pages sometimes to understand the English. But I think it was good, I think I’ll do it some more to challenge myself.
Coco Gauff added
Last year in the Middle East Swing, Gauff suffered an opening-round exit in Doha, losing to Marta Kostyuk in straight sets. Gauff also lost her opening-round match at the Dubai Open at the hands of McCartney Kessler.
Danielle Collins on Coco Gauff’s racket-smash incident
Coco Gauff suffered a heartbreaking quarterfinal exit at the Australian Open, where, in 2024, she made the semifinals. Elina Svitolina clinched a 6-1, 6-2 win, ending Gauff’s hope of reaching her first final at Melbourne Park.

Gauff then tried to find a quiet corner on her way to the locker room to obliterate her racket and release her frustrations. She wanted to do it away from the fans, but was unaware of the behind-the-scenes cameras capturing everything.
The two-time Grand Slam singles champion later called out the Australian Open for broadcasting it, calling for more off-camera spaces. Danielle Collins, who skipped the first Major of the season due to lingering back issues, gave her verdict on the same.
I think it’s a huge privacy issue. We have got to have some area we can go to after a match and be able to go through our thoughts and our different emotions and not feel like we are being watched every second of the day. I do not see any other sports right now, having the access that tennis has to the behind-the-scenes. I just think that it’s so unfair to the players not being able to step off the court and being able to have their time to themselves and their own privacy.

The American ace is also playing doubles in Doha along with reigning Canadian Open champion Victoria Mboko. The pair will lock horns with the seventh seeds Cristina Bucsa and Nicole Melichar-Martinez to start their campaign.
